Yes. I wrote about right wing disinformation agents who woked washed the pandemic.

One of the many howlers from this group was the "harming the poor" critique. The poorest people were most likely to be disabled, more likely to be essential workers, and less able to access care when waves came. Thats why they died disproportionately. And MK took money from rich to spread the lie.

Virologist/molecular biologist Dr. Flossie Wong-Staal altered the trajectory of the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. First to clone HIV-1 & complete its genetic mapping, directly leading to life-saving antiviral drug cocktails. Most-cited female scientist of the 1980s. Born #OTD in 1946. #WomenInSTEM

Sigh. Taps sign. Again. You DO NOT want legislative term limits. They're bad. We know they're bad. We know this with as much certainty as it's possible to know anything in the social sciences. We have mountains of evidence from the 17 states that have tried it. No good comes from term limits.

Mary Peltola@marypeltola.com

Pass term limits. Ban congressional stock trading. Overturn Citizens United. Get foreign influence out of our politics. It won't fix everything, but it's a start. We need leaders who are willing to fight to fix the broken system that’s shutting down Alaska.

Put simply -- either Democrats hold Republicans accountable for this mess when they retake Congress, or voters will blame Democrats for it down the line.

Participants in our National Advocacy Institute for youth and our broader community joined us to honor our collective fight to build a more perfect union and to uplift key individuals' contributions. Our honorees included Bruce Springsteen and Colin Kaepernick for their tireless, powerful advocacy.

I look for info on the McConnell situation about 5 times a day, because--legitimately--as a mystery writer I have a major interest in how you hide a dead body.

Seriously. Some of the smartest people in the world are working to make online gambling as addictive as possible. You aren’t immune.

i worked in several casinos and later for an online sportsbook. the best advice i can give you is to stay the hell away from all of it.

It’s worth noting that Taco Bell identified the source before the FDA did, and promptly pulled it from their stores. The FDA didn’t even name the source until Taylor Farms outed themselves, and hasn’t issued a recall. Basically, Taco Bell is now a more reliable authority than the FDA.

Flailing autocrats often try to game elections, but then their failure to win a gamed election will often doom them. But it does not happen automatically. When Trump messes with elections in 2026 and 2028 (not if), fans of democracy must push back hard, forcing law enforcement into submitting.

This is a political project to disempower the educated middle class as much as it is an attempt to make money. It does not matter if it's inefficient. They will find a way to use their massive political power to plug any gaps unless we push back politically.

A lot of this is also rooted in the fact that left wing men would rather try to win back white working class men than build a coalition with white women with college degrees (who are decidedly economically progressive) and Black voters (older ones are conservative. Younger ones are more left-wing)

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

“But the bigger problem is how much of the media of ‘the left’ is dominated by men who appear to have no understanding of sexual abuse or intimate partner violence, but do have a pretty hefty sexist streak that they either aren’t aware of or don’t care to remedy.” YES @juliedicaro.bsky.social

Here's how I choose to see the Platner situation. OPPORTUNITY. He's gotta go. We'll get a better candidate. This uncomfortable moment can be a bridge to something better. There's still time.

As the director of a historical video game preservation institution, and someone who has dedicated his entire adult life to this cause, this is accurate. We have attempted to work with the industry's trade organization to find a legal path forward, but they refuse to offer a meaningful alternative.

Chloe@addamschloe.bsky.social

piracy is the only extant form of media preservation that exists in games right now, you might find it morally reprehensible but there is literally no other institution that will keep games alive in 25, 50 years' time

looking forward to future SCOTUS discovering other exceptions when a future Dem POTUS tries to use the Slaughter powers

ElieNYC@elienyc.bsky.social

Ugh. Supreme Court rules in Slaughter, 6-3 that Trump can fire people from the FTC. But in Cook, Court rules 5-4 that Trump cannot fire everybody from the Fed. Roberts writes both majority opinions There's no real difference between the FTC and the FED other than Roberts likes the Fed.

The real mindfuck is thinking back to 2000 and realizing that things are so much worse now than any of the most hyperbolic, apocalyptic predictions for how bad things would get after Bush v Gore

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

The Constitutional Crisis started in 2000. You've been living through it your entire adult life. The reason politics feels hopeless is by design — conservatives broke our democratic form of government to guarantee that the people cannot act against them and are continuing to break it.

Tomorrow at SCOTUS is gonna be like: a. Trans athletes get screwed b. Another campaign finance law is gutted c. Birthright citizenship is upheld ... and we're all supposed to focus on (c) and forget about all the atrocious decisions that preceded it. Let's not, please!

abbamouse.bsky.social reposted

There's no sugar-coating Slaughter. It's an enormously important ruling (far more important than the other three decisions #SCOTUS handed down today). It's a huge win for Trump/the executive. And it's going to have massive ramifications for the functioning of the government long after Trump is gone.

A lot of media coverage of the ‘AI’ reading of the Herculaneum scrolls really fails to understand what’s happened here. There’s no language processing happening, the AI/ML is not trained on a corpus of texts or language. It can detect ink to see shapes. HUMAN EXPERTS are then transcribing the text.

Today’s SCOTUS opinion in Slaughter, allowing POTUS to fire commissioners at will, will harm other agencies, including EEOC, EPA, Consumer Product Safety Board, FCC, FDIC, SEC, Nuclear Safety Board.

I wouldn't have been able to afford grad school (and I got full tuition waivers) without federally-backed loans. Great to see the institutions that produced you methodically dismantled.

The idea that there's a connection between federal student loans and what colleges charge dates back almost four decades. But it's unclear that link can lead to lower costs.
