DYK a language dies every ~14 days & more than half of the world's 7,000 languages could vanish by 2100. The Eyak language went extinct #OTD in 2008 when Chief Marie Smith Jones of Alaska's Eyak tribe & the last fluent speaker of Eyak died at the age of 89. #indigenous #language #linguistics (1/2)

Astonishing. Beautiful.

“The history of language can refuse genealogy in favor of solidarity and set aside what we have shared in favor of what we might someday share.” New at PB, Aditi Rao looks at two recent books that explore what to do with a shared ancient language.

This is why LLM-generated fake citations are a problem. AI as it currently exists just can't be used for knowledge work. The infrastructure we have doesn't safeguard against the problems it creates.

Ben Williamson@benpatrickwill.bsky.social

Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵 Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

Like a lot of folks, I'm culturally Christian but not practicing. To me, that means embracing the message of love, acceptance, and universal human worthiness that we associate with Christ. Wise words from our malört pontifex. Merry Christmas 🎄❤️

Rich Raho@richraho.bsky.social

Pope Leo on Christmas Eve: “On earth, there is no room for God if there is no room for the human person. To refuse one is to refuse the other.”

I understand that allocating grant money is complicated. Equity, access, prioritization, practical questions and fundamental research. I get that it's a hard, collective problem. But holy cow, we are NOT crushing it.

Monica H Green@monicamedhist.bsky.social

This report in Nature on the costs of competing for & administering scientific grants is shocking: "In other words, European taxpayers will have spent more on the funding process than on the funding itself, and the scientific ecosystem has been drained." www.nature.com/articles/d41... 🧪

The damage from this is tremendous. Citation chains are fragile and flawed, but they're the connective tissue of our epistemic system. Every fake citation is a broken thread in a network that only functions when it's widely, richly connected. We have an 8th intractable problem with AI.

Seven insurmountable problems with AI: 1. Cost/economic waste 2. Water and land 3. Energy 4. IP theft and training data shortages 5. Bias and social violence 6. Hallucination 7. Damage to learning (esp higher ed) and loss of professional expertise I suppose citations fall under 6, really.

My own little guy came from Where the Love Is! I was in Guilford, CT at the time. I'd recommend them strongly to anyone nearby — they rely heavily on volunteers and, at least in Kiwi's case, rescued a litter of stray puppies from a ranch that couldn't keep 'em. Where's your pet from?

Destiny, back in 2014. No one had ever made a shooter that felt so good to play. A miracle of game design. And the vibes were immaculate. These days? Goat Simulator. What could compare to laughing with your spouse?

God that's so cool. Imagine a government just doing stuff that fixes problems. I know they haven't taken action yet, but they're moving very fast and they absolutely crushed it last time this happened.

Hey, I just wrote about this! Nadis, like Begus and co, relies on Chomsky to define "metalinguistic abilities” — so this paper actually has nothing to do with human language in the same way that phrenology has little to do with psychology. medium.com/@acornapocal...

If language is what makes us human, what does it mean now that large language models have gained “metalinguistic” abilities? www.wired.com/story/in-a-f...

Geertz's "thick description" adds necessary depth to observational research. I love that "thick" empathy also seeks the concrete, grounding empathy in specific shared experiences. Great example of how phenomenology, like materialist analysis, can anchor abstractions in the realities of human life.

M.J. Crockett@mjcrockett.bsky.social

New preprint: Empathy, Thick and Thin papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.... It is perhaps foolhardy to attempt to say something new about a topic as widely studied as empathy. I tried anyway! 1/

The tl:dr is that humans do language in ways that can't be reproduced without a body. Generative linguistics is SO disembodied that it's clearly just false on some level, making it (ironically) a poor framework within which to study an LLM's textual outputs and means of generating them.

Even if one extends unwarranted charitability, "biological male/female" demonstrates poor linguistic awareness and a weak grasp of concepts tied to gender, sex, and gender-affirming care. "AMAB/AFAB" or "trans man/woman" are clearer, more informative, more accurate, and kinder to boot.

There are so many stories of animals finding only destruction in our built spaces. I love when, occasionally, an animal stumbles in and goes "oh hell yeah, this rules, it's my time to shine" I feel like raccoons are the champs of this. Maybe also rats.

Matt Novak@paleofuture.bsky.social

“‘After a few hours of sleep and zero signs of injury (other than maybe a hangover and poor life choices), he was safely released back to the wild, hopefully having learned that breaking and entering is not the answer,’ the agency said.” By poor life choices they mean being a fucking rock star
