No law is perfect. We went 29 years without a single mass shooting, and in this incident the shooters were limited to shot guns, which limited the causalities and made police response easier (automatic weapons are banned). That's the law working.

Yeah, we should definitely make sure that the tyrant is the only one with guns now. Y'know, for safety. I don't know what those wacky founding fathers were thinking when they thought we should ALL have the right to protect ourselves from the government, which we know will always be democratic.

Yeah okay. So at what point do you think all the people here with all those guns--the patriots?--are going to rise up against the tyranny now that we're living under it? 'Cause last time I checked, they *voted for it*. So remind me what the guns are for again? Besides shooting libs?

No, silly, I expect libs to arm themselves so that they aren't utterly at the mercy of a hostile state and their MAGA neighbors. I expect the people who say they care about Democracy not to deny themselves and the rest of us the tools to defend it.

Americans crying about the Gun laws in the U.S on Social media again. Here's an Idea. Just move to australia. Most if not all of you are ethnic foreigners anyhow. Just move. Move to Europe. Go to Japan. Leave. You guys are do nothings. Give me a break.

That's not what the ruling says. It's not that every individual has a right, it's that there is AN individual right. Basically that the govt can ban you from keeping a gun in your home for self defense.

Well they need those guns. Y'know. In case there's ever a corrupt authoritarian regime that flouts the law and rounds up US citizens.

Americans have a high tolerance for violence. Voters do not make serious gun reform a priority and legislators are cowardly. It requires voters making this their absolute first priority at every govt level. We can change this. Unfortunately Americans have greater priorities than innocent lives.

It's worth noting that this discussion has been going on for a while in aus. There's more guns than there were in 1997, and it hadn't gone unnoticed. Though miniscule compared to our belligerent "special friend", gangland gun violence has been increasing for a while

It was never so much that Australians are more willing to he controlled than Americans (lol), more that guns form so small a part of our everyday that the vast majority of us were like "fair enough, I don't use it anyway" or mostly "fair enough, I never even had one". The cash helped too.

WHY CAN'T WE DO THIS IN THE US? INSTEAD, THE GOP SUPPORTS THE GUN GROUPS FOR THE MONEY. PEOPLE DIE FOR POLITICIANS AND MONEY. AND DON'T GIVE ME THE STORY OF THE 2ND AMENDMENT. READ THE ENTIRE RULE AND YOU WILL LEARN WHAT IT DOES SAY...

And they don't have loose gun regulations now. That's what a Responsible nation does. Tries even hard to prevent it's citizenry from being murdered. I'm tired of living in a rogue state.

In 1996 a madman entered a UK school and shot children We changed law, it’s 30 years next year The kids of 96 have kids now & since that day Not ONE SINGLE CHILD has been shot in a British school 30 years ZERO School shootings Gun control works

True... no NRA but we do have a gun lobby. Also some appalling rightwing media (we spawned Murdoch, to our shame). But the majority of us just won't put up with the *good man with a gun, thoughts and prayers, Second Amendment* bullshit. If we had a Second Amendment, we would amend the fucker!

Gun control can be achieved when leaders possess the necessary political will

Less than 24 hours after the Bondi beach shooting in Sydney became Australia's first mass shooting event in 30 years, national, State and territory government leaders agreed unanimously to tighten gun ownership laws to protect citizens by making Australia a safer place

The decision to pursue improved gun control laws took Australian leaders less than 24 hours following the Bondi shooting

Australia's Federal, State and territory leaders have agreed to strengthen Australia's gun control laws in the wake of the Bondi shooting terror attack - a decision made unanimously less than 24 hours after the country's first mass shooting event in 30 years

DAMN! Australia ain’t bullshittin’! They will re-negotiate their current gun laws and make them tougher! Their Prime Minister was quoted after the mass shooting in 1996 by saying: “We’re not going to allow that American disease over here!”

Until Citizens United is overturned & we get gun $ out of politics…or vote in politicians who are like minded & wont take dirty $…we’re gonna hear “thoughts and prayers” ad nauseam.

Hey, #australia, how about enforcing the laws you already have on the books re: antisemitism? How about taking seriously the foreign govt interference and funding that supports weekly protests calling for death to Jews. It isn't just about the guns, mate.

This isn't happening. There are weekly protests against the genocide in Gaza. All kinds of people go, including non-Zionist Jews, with no calls to kill Jews. There ARE neo-nazis here. For some reason our anti-semitism envoy has been quiet about their rallies, though they have been widely decried

Ok, good faith here. Yes, there are foreign influencers at work. Yes, there have been attacks on Jewish communities, funded by them. We expelled the Iranian consul over it. Police & ASIO action is escalated. These are different to the anti-genocide protests. Yours, an Aussie non-practicing Jew.

Generally, we do. Strong laws were enacted post 9-11 and have been used multiple times. No law is perfect, but we've had fewer, and less lethal, incidents (and some human rights infringements). Lots of questions to be answered in this specific case. Give it time.

Loudly: keeping guns controlled is the fastest and most effective way to stop Jews being killed! Also helpfully stops other minorities & persecuted groups from being murdered. You can't control thoughts, you CAN constrain the capacity of people to act in those thoughts.

Bad faith. Give the investigation time, to understand the failures. Curtailing hate and discrimination? Yes, faster please. Much harder than weapons regulation though: can't regulate thoughts, block the internet or ban hate. Got ideas for quick wins we can lobby for? PS: I'm ethnically Jew.

But but but...it's too soon, so they're obviously politicizing a tragedy, and they haven't tried decades of praying about it, and everyone knows the only way to stop gun violence is to flood the streets with more guns than people, and.... Yeah. I wish America could be more like Australia.

Here in the USA we have thought’s and prayers, a do nothing Congress and a fat fucking Nazi president who supports violence proven today. Shocker. America is broken and the only way to fix it is to impeach and get rid of the Nazi cabinet also. Nothing will be done. They will all go on break soon

But I thought Australia already had guns all figured out? You know, it's ALMOST as if there is no law strict enough to prevent people from killing each other. Maybe let's wait to talk about giving all our guns to the government until AFTER the government is no longer run by psychopathic fascists.

Or, hear me out, let's control the guns already out. With laws. Crazy, I know, but it might just work in a civilized country like Australia unlike some others I can think of. Not gonna say names, but they have a Texas.

Let's be clear. This shooting and the rapid response by Australia's Labor government has nothing to do with America, what the American political system can or can't do or what Americans do or don't think about guns.

Can I just say I'm so proud of the comments here. If this was Twitter you would've gotten some maniac trying to explain why guns is a god given right. Like guns are some divine holy historical relic that predates mankind by 100,000,000 years.

And I know a lot of Australians and literally none of them are complaining about swift actions. In fact, they welcome it. They think the United States is insane when it comes to our lack of gun laws.

The constitutional right is infringed the moment children can't buy weaponized anthrax at a convivence store. Unless you have those views the constitutional infringement argument is stupid.

They can’t until they abolish the 2nd amendment to remove gun ownership as a right. That won’t happen. Also, there 420 million firearms minimum in the US, you’d have recover them. An impossible task. What they could do is a sneaky trick. Ban ammunition. There is no right to own ammunition. 🤷‍♂️

also national cabinet was a remake of the existing coag meetings from before 2020, though I'm mostly bringing this up because natcab was Scott Morrison's idea for less transparency (natcab minutes were classified, coag weren't) and fuck that guy

As an Aussie, I can say with certainty, it will happen because when the Silent Majority becomes vocal, the politicians do listen. Last time this happened, we had new gun laws in place within days. All because the Majority weren't going to be silenced.

While America does nothing to improve stricter gun laws. Thanks to republicans and trump. Because the NRA is funding the republican senators and the trump administration.

I do like it. If it’s any consolation though, definitely not all leaders. The previous … shitstain … got a lot of people killed and nearly all of us unnecessarily locked down because he failed to Covid seriously on a bunch of occasions.
