This. And if most Americans weren't aware of this in 2019, I'd guess they're even less so now. Public university students were paying for a third of the cost of their education in 2009, and it was up to half by 2019. 2009 wasn't great compared to the 60s-70s, either. www.pbs.org/newshour/edu...

In a new paper out today in Science Advances with my USGS colleagues, we describe the climate and environment of the White Sands playa when early humans walked on it 23,000 years ago. We also have an even tighter chronology with a lock to the Greenland ice core! news.arizona.edu/news/footpri...

As a PhD student designing my first survey, I added what I thought was a throwaway question at the end. To my surprise, thousands of academics answered it! The paper is out today: doi.org/10.1093/pnas...

Happy to share our new study shows stronger growth declines and weaker water-use adjustment in Norway spruce than Scots pine in southern Finland. Species and site matter for future forests.

Over the past 120 Myr, most evolutionary change in fossil spore-pollen floras (floristic turnover: both extinctions & originations), at high- & low-palaeolatitudes, is concentrated within two periods of extreme warm climate. Cooler eras are comparatively uneventful.🌱🧪 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Fossil taxa are sometimes considered island weirdos without any actual evidence that island effects were important in their evolution. So we wrote a paper on how we could do actual island biogeography in deep time. If you want a copy but can't access it, email me: www.nature.com/articles/s44...

Striking, and appropriate, that this piece comes from a professor from a business school. The business world relies on public research and universities for its talent pipeline. Cutting off international students with an unachievable degree deadline cuts that pipeline. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

🌏🌲Do trees produce more #wood as a result of #globalwarming? Not necessarily, according to a new study led by the WSL and published in @science.org. Annual wood production depends more on growth rate than on duration of growth – with implications for carbon storage. www.wsl.ch/en/news/more...
Well this is going to screw over large swaths of the western US. River's like the Salt and Verde don't necessarily make the cut under these rules.
The EPA announced an updated WOTUS rule proposal. “This is a humongous rollback and it’s a bigger rollback than their initial proposal,” said NRDC's Jon Devine. Gift link for my latest @bloomberg.com: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Your big data is only a big data set because a whole bunch of people did the insignificant, unworthy of your time, not important enough to publish, effort to build & maintain collections over the years, which you then scooped up into your dataset for a proper "big picture" study. <6/n>

Britain's universities are changing. Far more of their 18-21yo undergrads will have to live in the parental home. Yet whole regions are becoming subject deserts and are going to have far less HE. So stupid: no plan, no policy, no-one in charge. Dumb as rocks. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
