📢UNIVERSITY WIDE STRIKE TOMORROW Join us on the picket line as we stand united in solidarity against the attacks our management has taken against the university. Let's show them what strength looks like!

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

Many constituents have contacted me, devastated by the University of Nottingham’s decision to approve plans to close modern languages and music degrees, cut support services and end one-to-one personal tutoring.

Solidarity with @uonucu.bsky.social members once again striking against compulsory redundancies and course closures. Such an outcome would devastate workers, students, and our city, as well as UK research. I urge the university leadership to do the right thing and protect jobs and courses.

Nottingham today. Everywhere tomorrow. 2,700 staff put at risk. 600+ jobs targeted. At least 48 courses facing closure. What happens here sets the template for the sector. Stand with Nottingham.

Replying to @parismarx.com

i legitimately wonder if it’s just being ill-informed and naive on AI, but when i see so many of these orgs reaching out to cultists like Nate Soares instead of left tech critics to make sense of this, i feel we’re seeing the problem of a business model that relies on sensationalism to drive traffic

Our members at Nottingham University commence strike action today over threats to hundreds of jobs and course closures. Please show them solidarity as they head onto picket lines this morning.

My column on how capital becomes a death cult. Faced with a choice between profit and human life, the radical right chooses profit. Then it tries to persuade us that mass death is what we want. It's the new phase of climate denial: accept your fate, earthlings. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I strongly believe in giving the man a chance. But keeping Shabana Mahmood as Home Secretary suggests the vicious attacks on immigrants and refugees, and self-defeating attempts to outrun the far right, are likely to continue. Which is pretty damn depressing. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I don't feel sorry for Starmer. I feel for the Palestinians whose slaughter he enabled, for the trans people and refugees he's victimised, and my colleagues who've had their careers wrecked by Labour's assault on universities. A record to be ashamed of.

having heard @jamesrpalmer.bsky.social present this work a few weeks ago, I am really excited to read this critical work which seems at its heart a discussion of how technology and infrastructure affect what counts as a “good life,” and I suppose how this might be resisted at the micro scale
