I mean. I have BOUGHT cars for less than 750 quid...

Leftback@leftback.bsky.social

Rob's story doesn't add up, what's he spending that money on... 750 quid a month on his car for a 16 mile journey to work? Fuck off! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Cats are very efficient at internalising and obeying imposed rules. Their internalisations are all of the form: When there is a human being present, I may not do X.

Also, what's all the panic about "AI systems rapidly approaching human-level intelligence" going rogue? There are already eight billion systems on this planet with human-level intelligence. Some of them do go rogue, and all are A LOT more difficult to control. But we seem to manage by and large.

Roose does a very nice job signaling in the second paragraph what sort of book this will be. He decided to write it the night after partying with ketamine-snorting effective accelerationists. He isn’t e/acc himself, but he hangs with that crowd and accepts their premises as newsworthy,

Partly the fash at the Beeb, of course. But it's also the fact that Reform really understand something that the Libs and Greens seem not to. Live TV schedules are a continuous production panic of blank that has to be filled. If your party is doing a speech that's vaguely relevant they'll cut to it.

Alex Andreou@sturdyalex.bsky.social

BBC News just interrupted its coverage to go, live, to Nigel Farage - a man with no contitutional standing in our setup - responding to the budget - a document which nobody has seen yet. WHY

You can just imagine the person at the Bank of England on the other end of the phone. "Oh Christ! It's her and him again. They want to have Another Meeting about their batshit ideas. Shall we just do the usual? Take the uniforms off a few cleaning staff and send them."

Andy Bruce (Reuters)@bruceandy.bsky.social

New Liz Truss book doesn't disappoint. Thrust is blaming the Bank of England for the Sept 2022 market fallout, especially its quantitative tightening announcement the day before the mini-budget. She claims that she and Kwarteng were "caught off-guard", blindsided by the BoE's announcement.

Lula: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. A crime in the digital world must be treated the same as a crime in the real world. We cannot have monstrous companies earning millions... not paying taxes... wanting to steer elections."

Democracy has delivered: Vučić has conceded the Serbian election. ✅ Lula holds Brazil. ✅ Labour well ahead again in the UK. ✅ Now we need Netanyahu gone and the Democrats to take US House and Senate.

Once. Just once. I'd like to watch a dystopian science fiction movie or TV series that doesn't have someone welding or using an angle grinder with a shower of iron sparks.

Nothing makes me feel more like a citizen of the Earth than overhearing my half-Bangladeshi half-Indian British daughter chat to her best friends from Yorkshire, Germany, Italy, Russia, Jordan and Spain, nattering away in Catalan...

This is horrendous. I would have just despldered the mike and routed the TV audio into the connections via a couple of capacitors and maybe a potential divider.

Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

Strongly agree. It's not unreasonable of the government to ask grown-ups to give half an hour's thought to what they would want to hand if the power or water went out overnight.

Scandal in Nottingham as Ye Olde Trip doesn't even make it into the top ten oldest pubs in England. Even worse is that it's beaten by a pub in Southwell. The shame.

The most frustrating thing for every scientist and engineer on the planet is that WE HAVE THE ANSWER to the climate crisis. But the fucking politicians will only implement about a third of it. If someone's on fire, you don't put a third of it out with a fire extinguisher then say, "Good enough."

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

In the long term this is way more destructive than Jackdaw, because it actively slows down electrification and weaning households off residual LNG consumption.
