Everybody is talking about Lula, but actually the victory in Serbia of a student-led, anti-government group fronting candidates from across society is almost more interesting for what it says about the potential to genuinely transform politics with the right movement at the right moment.

Time to put this into a wider context. Schools and exam boards make it harder for girls/women to see themselves in science than in Humanities. Universities are cutting provision in Humanities, where students are disproportionately female. Is this what equality looks like?

1/3 Higher education in the UK is at a critical juncture. Universities make a substantial contribution to society and the economy, but the system faces mounting pressures, and too many difficult questions remain unresolved. Today we launch a new policy programme, to tackle that shorturl.at/079yt

The police are investigating. They will have their lines of enquiry. Please share this image widely so that everyone knows what it looked like.
This stinks that a plaque at an English castle acknowledging Caribbean prisoners of war got taken right after it went up. It’s an insult to those who got it placed and the memories of the people it commemorates. Usual motive for something like this is: 1. We hate “woke” 2. Want the metal for scrap
Thanks so much to everyone who came and spoke - we had 11 out of 15 contributors on the call! And thanks @pollyhember.bsky.social, who grabbed this picture of a key moment!

There are many problems with Turnitin from an ethical point of view, but I don't entirely agree with this. A strong correlation for AI work in Turnitin is actually an unusually LOW similarity score, as many of the common phrases students necessarily use in their own, human writing just aren't there.
'Phil Newton, a professor of neuroscience at the University of Swansea, said the rise of AI had reduced the need for Turnitin’s core plagiarism checking service, with its AI detector proving less useful for universities.'
It's National Poetry Day in the UK, so why not have a look at the essays in Beyond Modernism by Allan Pero (on Sacheverell Sitwell), Lauren Faro (on Jessica Dismorr), or Susan Reid (on Rachel Annand Taylor)? www.bloomsbury.com/uk/beyond-mo... @bloomsburyacademic.bsky.social

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics.
This is really shameful cultural vandalism. www.heraldscotland.com/news/2655944...

As a not yet binned member of staff who has been threatened with the bin within the last year, I'm genuinely curious about the feasibility of this and what it might look like.
Has the time come for us binned staff to start setting up our own actual universities? Leave the wreckage of neoliberal academia and publishing to the corporate warlords and their enablers and start again? I switch between this thought and settling down with the cat for a quiet life.

I was recently in New Chapter Books in Wigtown, Scotland's Book Town, and they had this fantastic display of ephemera found in the pages of books!
Starting a thread of my best ever bookmark finds in 2nd-hand books (feel free to join in with your own in the replies). This is a Southern Vectis Omnibus ticket (a bus company on the Isle of Wight) that was in my 1938 Penguin edition of Ethel Mannin's first autobiography, Confessions and Impressions
