Ignore what the polls say and make sure you vote like your life depends on it, because it does. Don’t wait if you have the option to vote early. It’s tempting to give it a pass because things look good, but if too many folks do that, the momentum stops. Make sure yours counts.

Stock markets are not the economy. Stock markets are a numerical representation of the expectations hopes, anxieties and fears of the 1%. Rich people are sad they don't get to do corruption without consequence. Poor babies.

It's very, very telling, I think, that the markets are so concerned about the pro-democracy incumbent winning

I created this photo using recent research so it relaxes your brain when you pause to look at the details. As I'm sometimes too unwell to post here (not good mental health due to PMDD & recovering from a breakdownA) it would help so much if you could maybe RT my photo. Many thanks 🌿

Honestly several things are depressing about ai but the two that stand out are the eagerness of people to outsource thought because cognitive effort is uncomfortable, and the casualness with which people use the shiny, easy thing knowing it's bad for climate change

In my experience, artists won't stop telling you about their actual tools. 50p in the jukebox will get you 30 minutes on why Pen A is better than Pen B, complete with a sidebar into the rare exceptions and a side-sidebar into how to buy it without getting ripped off.

yeh tbh if AI is so great you should be proud of it, you should disclose it everywhere and put a bunch of stickers yourself that you used it for your project showing everyone how cool and cutting edge you are, no? like, it's the future right? you love it right??

because it is relevant to my work, I have tried very hard to educate myself on how AI works, be fair and measured in how I evaluate it, and regularly test new tools to confirm or debunk my priors and tbh AI haters are just nailing it with less work like 99% of the time. keep at it folks

Learn this one early. I have SO many smart people in my life, and I love listening to them talk about the things they know. If you spend all your time trying to one-up or outdo everyone else with your smarts, people notice, and will avoid you. Seriously, just listen. It’s great. You learn stuff!

On the same week the DCCC released its first anti-transgender ad, popular Democratic politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez did not mince words. When asked about anti-trans Democrats, she called them "shameful," "wrong," and decried them for "scaring so easily." Subscribe to support our journalism.

There’s details in this that are notable, but overall absolutely amazing. I imagine most of us will eventually know someone who’s life was saved because of this. Star Trek level technology here.

I frequently observe that AI companies engage in the “strip mining of our souls” through their unauthorized capture of our creative expressions & personal information to build their humanity-enfeebling products. Also important to recall they also engage in more typical forms of strip mining.

Tip for folks voting in IL, my ballot has four judges up for “nonpartisan” retention on it. If you want to find their actual leanings, look up their name and campaign contributions, which are public record. 3 of my 4 are republicans trying very hard right now to pretend they aren’t.

Can confirm. My dad worked for my town’s water treatment plant and I remember him doing this with a $20 he found. Also? A lot of seeds make it through treatment and vegetables would grow on the sludge pile. His coworkers would often take stuff home, but that was a bridge too far for him.

Thanksgiving is coming up. Here are some things to keep in mind: Anybody can be kind to anybody else, at any time. That relative who claims (and whose enablers claim) they "just can't change" is full of shit. Anybody can learn to use your name, shake your partner's hand, respect your diet. 9/_

Offspring, OTOH, can exercise no such boundaries. Boundaries are POWER and power may be exercised only by the few. The Venn Diagram of people ranting about family estrangement and those sympathetic to spanking and Dobson-style parenting is a motherfucking circle. 8/_

Family estrangement isn't new. The present moral panic is a version of Wilhoit's Law: there are family members whom the family code protects but does not bind and those whom the code binds but does not protect. Elders can denigrate you, police your politics, choose your mate, blackmail you. 7/_

I don’t have kids, but I still vote for every tax increase for our local schools, library, etc, because kids deserve better. Everyone’s kids. The whole community benefits when we pay into it.

Matthew Gertz@mattgertz.bsky.social

“I should only pay taxes for things I use” is a fun precept to adopt after you’ve stopped using services that were funded by the full tax base — you would have needed to pay much much more when your kids were in school if seniors hadn’t been pitching in with property taxes back then!

Also, as it's getting colder would anyone like a very soft handmade one of a kind fringed shawl? I have three that Nana knitted. One large and two medium sized, modeled on my 6' frame, for reference. Asking 145 for A, 95 for B&C, proceeds go directly to Nana's bills.
