Sitka Media paid this homophobic, racist, pro-Eugenics BC Conservative staffer dude to write pro oil industry slop. remember that when you share their benign municipal coverage content. this is not a normal media company

Dang when I search his name I am the only person who has ever posted about this dude on here lol? Not that I want to think about him, but I feel like he deserves at least some scrutiny. How did he go from being fired from the BC Cons last year to being financial agent for a candidate this year?

In British Columbia there is the NDP and the anti-NDP. The latter change their name every few decades. These guys haven't been out of power a decade.

One more BC thread. The NDP are going to spend a lot of time figuring out what went wrong. I think Eby never found his stride as premier, and the path to leadership was where things started to go wrong. Eby wasn't used to being the bad guy, but the disqualification of Appadurai did not go over well.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

good find for my research on NY Galician klezmer musicians, a member of the extensive Goldring family from Skalat, many of whom became musicians in NYC, wrote a short memoir that someone posted on Ancestry. By Morris Goldring (1894–1968).

Not much else about music although he does talk about the untimely death of his musician brother Sigmund in 1947, and how much it shook his mother.

unless it's a different town with the same name, he grew up in the same place (Podwołoczyska/Підволочиськ) as NY Ukrainian fiddler superstar Pawlo Humeniuk who I was posting about earlier this year. they must have known each other in NYC, because Humeniuk had other Goldrings play on his recordings

reading on, this must have been around 1912–14 because he started medical school at NYU in 1915. He talks about summer classes because of many of the professors being drafted in '17, and how many of the medical students were sent to help deal with the Spanish Flu epidemic the following year.

For obvious reasons he gives up playing music professionally, although he does talk about organizing a pageant in the seniors ward at Montefiore Hospital when he was an intern there, in which he played piano, and which inspired him to open his own senior's home later in life. Interesting guy.

He then worked evenings in dance studios "operated by incompetent teachers who taught basic steps only to the tune of repetitive piano chords," till he graduated public school and could join the music union (AFM local 310).

Eventually by way of an aunt living in Newark NJ, they were sent tickets and some family members went to save enough money for him and the other kids to be brought. They settled on East 2nd St and his dad & oldest brother joined the music union while he enrolled in basically an ESL school.

When he was old enough, he wanted to self-finance going to medical school, but found that being a newspaper boy and other youthful gigs paid pitiful wages, so he went back to music to support himself. He worked in a cigar store long enough to pay himself a few piano lessons.

he talks about how in 1903 refugees from the Kishinev pogram crossed the border and settled in the town (Podwołoczyska, not Skalat), and kickstarted the moribund economy of the town. at this time, when he was 9, his father taught him the basics of playing chords as a second violinist, and so...

... along with a dance master who lived in town, they were able to throw events and open a dance school, buying new clothes.

He became a physician after WWI and left music behind, but unlike his relatives, he wrote it down. I've posted about other members of this family who came up in my YIVO research, but Morris was the son of Charles Goldring (1866–1930) and brother of Sigmund (1888–1947), who remained klezmers in NYC.

Yaletown also deserves a lot of our contempt IMO. from animating Ken Sim's years of vicious politics by whining about safe injection sites to now electing a National Post columnist chummy with Nazis as their MLA

it finds so many more records about Galician people that I am getting a messier picture of some klezmer musicians & their family members.🥺 conversion to Christianity (after 40 years of leaving the village klezmer life behind and being a classical musician), divorcing wives, marrying cousins..

despite not fully understanding how it was put together with AI or how it found stuff I have to admit archival.name is pretty powerful for research for example searching a random place in Galicia (Tarnopol) + Muzykant 🕵️‍♀️ brings up 100+ results to look at the originals

Yikes! Who keeps advising this strategy of Eby begging for Green votes. Aside from being somewhat pitiful, it only irritates and cements the decision of decided Green voters and underlines that the NDP have lost the progressive vote.

David Eby@davidebybc.bsky.social

Supporters of the BC NDP and the Green Party share a lot of the same values. Strong public health care, protecting the place we call home, and asking the wealthiest to chip in more to build a stronger B.C.

ah, it was delayed a bit because it had been misplaced in the archive, but they finally sent it to me. a 1953 memorial essay by Karol Rathaus about his uncle, the klezmer and composer Chune Wolfsthal. you can read it here: drive.google.com/file/d/1X7mW... the draft: drive.google.com/file/d/1xjFL...

Dan Carkner@alte.klezmor.im

huh interesting, the composer Karol Rathaus was Wolfsthal's newphew and wrote an essay of his recollections of him. It's in this archive but I couldn't find it fully digitized online, so I wrote to them.

(previously, a search like Tyśmienica would cause an error but Tysmienica would work) (I'm still not sold on the overall site redesign I think I'll need to get used to the new look)

encountered a dude in the wild using Malin's work to try and AI generate klezmer, with predictably heinous results. art doesn't work that way

Dan Carkner@alte.klezmor.im

A little klezmer music theory from Yonatan Malin.. "Here, I would like to dig a little deeper and ask questions about the tunes themselves, and especially their use of musical modes. What can we say about the klezmer modes based on this repertoire? How do the modes differ by genre or by informant?"
