New @thewiremagazine.bsky.social! I had the great pleasure of interviewing Bruno Silva, whose Ondness and Serpente records are some of my favourite music of recent years. I also wrote an essay on the metal subculture in 2026 and reviewed new albums by BBBBBBB 🥵 and Jesse Draxler 🖤.

Kinda crazy that some stuff I said ended up being printed in The Wire, along with the words of some other very cool folks. It's about metal and antifascism etc, nothing you haven't already heard from me, but it's part of a great article so go read it. Thanks @alteranthony.bsky.social

Technology in music is only interesting when it fails or is misused (overdriven amps, 303, feedback, etc), because this is a triumph for humanity and art over unnatural forces of order and predictability. AI is different. As long as it’s being used it can’t fail / be misused, as it’s in on the joke.

Cop this. Great compilation, great cause.

Klara Lewis's new album 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 is 𝘴𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘦 in the full sense of the word. Composed from field recordings, samples, and electronic loops, it's a piece of music beguiling in its surface beauty and dizzying in its depth. I reviewed it for @thequietus.com's Album of the Week.

Ok so for once I don't actually have any writing in the new issue of The Wire. BUT you should STILL BUY IT. Because *even without me* it remains – somehow, incredibly – a fantastic magazine.

Great to see my piece “Listening in the Shadow of Palantir” in the October issue of @thewiremagazine.bsky.social's Against The Grain series. It examines how machine listening techniques turn sound into data for contemporary infrastructures of surveillance with increasingly troubling results.

Mike Watt! ❤️❤️❤️ Inside the new @thewiremagazine.bsky.social, among many great pieces, you'll find my reviews of new music by @capgrasman.bsky.social & Eugene Thacker, OSEES, SML, Faith Coloccia & @dorjitashi.bsky.social, Bhajan Bhoy, plus a full-page Avant Rock column – with even more great music!

Each summer Christopher Nolan releases a movie it becomes a talking point for the whole world… Gonna petition him to make a film about Boulez-Cage correspondence so everyone becomes an expert on aleatoricism & integral serialism. ‘John, I agree with you entirely except for the use of pure chance’

It’s worse than this. Having been in the room with many of them (long ago, before I knew they were psychopaths), the tycoons who are left running the industry have an active contempt for ordinary people, including their own workers. They actively want to oppress, control and punish them.

This is an excellent piece that manages to shine some light on an otherwise quite enigmatic figure. I never expected that Canavarro would follow up his legendary 1988 album 𝘗𝘭𝘶𝘹 𝘘𝘶𝘣𝘢, but it looks like we might actually get something new from him.

It's new issue of The Wire time! This month, I interviewed reclusive mystery man of Portuguese electronic music, Nuno Canavarro and reviewed a festival of sound art in the suburbs of Copenhagen on the hottest day in Danish history.

🚨 new @thewiremagazine.bsky.social 🚨 Feat. @monsterbobby.bsky.social on Nuno Canavarro (!), @lucythraves.bsky.social's Space Afrika cover story, and a bunch of other great stuff. On my end, I reviewed four albums from the Deerhoofiverse, plus brill new music from Kassel Jaeger and BIG|BRAVE.

Our prehistoric ancestors didn’t start making music because they wanted to go viral on instagram or get on a Spotify playlist. The did it because they’d eaten psychedelic mushrooms in a reverberant cave and under those specific conditions it seemed like a fun thing to do.

For @thequietus.com, I review 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘺 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘵𝘰𝘧𝘧, where flautist Claire Chase and JACK Quartet transform Terry Riley’s open-score sketches into an effervescent, joyful suite. Realised by Samuel Clay Birmaher, the piece captures the playful lightness of Riley's latter-day style.
