Just heard Hunt on the radio saying Labour needs to "put the economics before the politics" in the Budget. The bloke who created an unaffordable cut in National Insurance prior to the election, which he knew the Tories would lose. Utter charlatan.

Peter Smith@redpeter99.bsky.social

The reinvention of Jeremy Hunt as a sage and elder statesman overlooks his role as a participant in the creation of the current shitshow. #BBCLauraK

So Dr Cofnas describes this dilemma for racists: the need to do more to distinguish themselves from thugs + crackpots + obsessive antisemites + racists, who bring stupid, racist support but reputational damage to the whole intellectual project of biological racism.

Worth adding that even if UK just accepted everything EU required that would not necessarily make it much faster: concerns about long-term commitment and about re-balancing internal dynamics would remain

"Any credible estimation of how long re-accession would take needs to... recognise that the chances of managing it within the life of a single parliament are very small indeed." ✍️ @simonusherwood.bsky.social argues that any UK re-accession to the EU will not be easy. ukandeu.ac.uk/how-long-doe...

Of course it's possible. I'd bet on minimum of two elections during the process.

Tony Yates@t0nyyates.bsky.social

A rather obvious thought only just occurred to me. That even if UK politics produced a decision to embark on Rejoin, a protracted process could easily take sufficiently long that there is another UK spasm and we back off before we complete it.

Honestly, the way Jeremy Hunt is treated as voice of reason on the economy bewilders me. It's like having Boris Johnson on to discuss how best to abide by public health rules.

Anand Menon@anandmenon.bsky.social

‘We don’t have the money for that’ says the former Chancellor who cut NI twice when we couldn’t afford it for purely political reasons.

Several things about this. First, the issue isn't the danger of Chinese cars from the UK getting into the EU market, it is Chinese vehicles eating up market share EU manufacturers might previosuly have had. More important 1/2 www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

theguardian.comUK resists EU pressure to hit China with tariffsExclusive: Business secretary says he will not change trade rules due to EU pressure and denies UK will become a ‘back door’ for cheap imports

this is all well and good, but let's not be surprised when the EU don't include us in Made in Europe and the like. This is as much about diplomatic alignment as it is anythng else. Our partners increasingly want us to pick a side, and that's going to involve some painful decisions or non-decisions.

Parliament debating relations with the EU. I'm getting triggered. Not least by the utter absence of anything approaching detail about future plans.

Well worth logging in for!

We still recall the outcry when the possibility of de-funding UKICE was first floated a few years ago. Obvs everyone recognises that research funds are limited & need to cover diverse needs. But again today: the loss of UKICE will be felt significantly: they've done a huge service to UK politics.
