was at a thing where there was a tree where children put up their wishes and one was "I wish to play rollercoaster Tycoon forever" like I'm so glad it's still a game children love 🥺

Looked at Next Fest and got demoralised immediately because almost everything was clearly using AI generated art, even a bunch of the featured demos (and not even bothering to tweak the prompts much). a lot of them are very obvious copies of existing games too. after a brief scroll I just gave up

At least 1,500 Palestinians forced out of their homes in Hebron since yesterday. This is ethnic cleansing by the apartheid state, once again, live-streamed.

ten years ago as a critic i would respond by analysing it as a piece of propaganda, considering how it produces and reflects culture but that feels so pointless now. who cares. you just look once and see what it is. they aren't hiding it. it is funded by and funding in turn an actual genocide

It's a shame that there was such a delay in reporting on this case until October, when the charges were made in May, because interested people have had ample time to distance themselves. E.g when you search for images of Toby Young and Lola Salem this comes up.

Samantha Asumadu@samanthaasumadu.substack.com

'Lola Salem was charged by Thames Valley Police in May this year along with Henry Hopwood-Phillips, a historian and geopolitical analyst with whom she worked with at the Critic Magazine

The mostly-excellent Pentiment includes a throwaway line of dialogue where the protagonist Andreas - a 16th century German - says he spent time in London and, while there, went "hiking in the Scottish Highlands". This is implausible to the point of farce for several reasons, and also Extremely Yank

Important thread about some behind-the-scenes discussion in the IGF regarding AI, and the broader moment of what it means to want or not want to use AI right now.

I am absolutely fascinated by people trying to thread the needle of saying "it's wrong to say zionism is racism" while avoiding open endorsement of the state of Israel as it exists

also fascinated by those saying "we agree with the motion but it's politically unwise". you could say this about any position that goes against hegemonic oppressive ideology, and it's still cowardly in those contexts too

the UK government's 'AI minister' is asking LLMs what to think about LLMs and thinks this is a 'focus group'

Zoë Crowther@zoecrowther.bsky.social

The AI minister has used AI-generated synthetic focus groups provided by a private company to test public opinion on AI and other issues The model is trained on data from real-life focus groups

I read "we're going to set up a Players Non-Profit that can call a General Assembly at any time and owns 5% of the development company" and I come over all tired and exhausted all of a sudden, especially when the rest of it what it involves is stuff like "access to dev diaries and a discord channel"

oh you got a labour organisation theorist to write up a constitution for your backer rewards, how nice. this is Yanis Faroufakis codifying the Valve hat economy on an artisanal scale, that's all

you've just made a patreon with a veneer of radicalism, this isn't a bold future for challenging concepts of ownership in the games industry

It's really refreshing seeing shitey normal working class life depicted like this in a game, and a Silent Hill game no less. Pebble-dashed council flats, three-bar fires, Post Office counters, concrete shopping precincts. This must be how posh people felt playing Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.

there's a bit in LBA2 where you go to the moon and do comical low-gravity bounding around in a spacesuit that you have to change out of at airlocks to enter the moonbase buildings. this is already delightful, the game really plays around with different movement sets

but when inside there are enemies who will charge at you. if you lure one of them into the airlock and change into the spacesuit, it begins the airlock cycle and they did a special animation for the enemy comically elongating and getting sucked out into space. the entire game is full of this stuff
