takes like these are fundamentally unserious and show that the person posting it has no actual desire to work towards more ethical uses of this tech, but instead are just edgelords trying for notoriety.

Deep down the people who work there just want to be held in high esteem. They want everyone to say β€œthank you for changing the world with your wonderful products” and they don’t want to be yelled at.

You can skip the gender metaphysics debate entirely if you say, "I don't care about that. I care about the material consequences trans people experience for living the way they want to," and then hammer the point home that no amount of gender metaphysics can ever justify transfemicide.

"Really cannot recommend enough having a diary or journal in which to write posts, instead of posting all of them to a public platform." You're right but WHAT IF someone has the Perfect Advice that will fix me and turn me into the person I always wanted to be

it's nothing new that cutting-edge computer systems can crack math problems humans previously couldn't, and it's nothing new that there are people that think that's a sign that we've cracked the code on giving the machine a mind and the singularity is here

Im supposed to make a hip-hop beat for my music production class. I've been having a fun time branching out and listening to a genre that I hadn't really listen to much before, but unfortunately the assignment is due in an hour and I currently have the most dogshit music ive ever made rn

Short thread asking @nytimes.com and other MSM to stop interviewing the same small handful of people every time something math-related comes up. Mathematicians are dismayed when AI scoops them on the results? How about look for advice from someone familiar with getting scooped and outpowered.

Terence Tao is typically described as one of the world’s greatest living mathematicians. He is on the front lines of a debate about artificial intelligence and the future of his field.

People forget the productive nature of having some limited ways in which communities can be closed to bullshit.

People are too obsessed with "performativity." Everyone is performative before theyre "genuine!" Simply saying anything is always going to be performative! Mamdani is as popular as he is because he is *more performative*, not less! "Genuine belief" is almost a fake concept!

people today don’t tend to think of making shoes or linens as an art but good crafts work requires at least as much skill, training, and creativity as painting or singing, and many of the same critiques being made now of ai art were (rightly, to a degree at least) made of industrial production

We need to incept the idea of Trump renaming the GOP to the Trump Party, and by β€œincept” I mean have a reporter mention it once within his earshot and he’ll become obsessed with it and not let it go

I do think that the social aspect of thisβ€”mathematics discoveries are commoditized and mathematicians are alienated from the outputs of their laborβ€”has some pretty bad implications, even though I'm excited about the potential acceleration in research outputs.

At the risk of sounding a bit melodramatic, to me there is like a purity to pure math (it’s in the name) and it feels vulgar in a way to treat it this way and it seems like that’s at least partly the point
