firefly.socialContinue reading on Firefly.SocialFor anyone getting into biology, please consider taking airborne disease resistance more seriously. It's a super important area of medicine that is a huge cause of death and sickness but easily gets forgotten. We're likely to get many more airborne plagues in the future due to the combination of not just extremely dense and interconnected society (including city and farm animals), but also accidents from bio research and offensive biotech (both from random people and from secret government programs that can easily get themselves exempted from safety restrictions), all enhanced by powerful AI. Right now, this area is getting way less love than longevity research (which continues to be super important!), but it's an area where there are lots of unclaimed wins that we know exactly how to do (but are not yet doing) with present-day tech: * early detection * passive universal testing * filtration/ventilation/UVC * better vaccines (including making them open source and open science) * cryptography to make all of the above privacy-preserving We can have China-level pandemic resistance with Sweden-level limited intrusion into people's lives, and then go even further. We just have to actually do the work for it.

Campaign week is off and running! From today until 1 Nov, orgs around the world are coming together to shine a light on the air we share indoors, raise awareness of why indoor air quality matters and encourage more organisations to make information about the air we breathe publicly available.

This post is unavailable.

Und hab ich da irgendwas verpasst oder ist das einzige Argument dafür dass da eine Gefahr besteht, dass es bei den Protesten in Frankreich nicht friedlich blieb?

Finally had time to create a short tutorial video to show how to use the indoorco2map.com App as first time user. It's just 2 minutes long despite covering the full work flow including first time setup. (the measurement is sped up). If you know anyone with a supported CO2-Monitor, please share :-)

IndoorCO2map is more of an inorganisation so we can't really participate directly (and I can't speak for our community as such anyways in any authorative sense), but I'll spread the word and do some more measurements than usual.

💙 What is Making the invisible visible? Making the invisible visible is an awareness campaign that shines a light on the air we share indoors. We’re asking organisations to measure their indoor air quality and make that information publicly visible by November 2027.

Meta is so unbelievably evil. They make a technology primarily designed to enable abuse, harassment and privacy violations, but also embed real disability aids. The tactic now is to use an entire community as human shields to defend against criticisms www.engadget.com/2236054/meta...

Aaagh WTAF?!? 😱 I knew IPC's delusions of adequacy were bad, but...they hand-waved "evaporates to droplet nuclei that remain airborne indefinitely" into "evaporates, so that means it magically disappears and it can't be airborne" How is medical leadership so full of people who can't 🤬 THINK?!?

We ended up with 171 Measurements yesterday - mostly in stores. Without going into details, I think one important things these measurements do is to provide context into how bad Ventilation is in schools. Fast-Fashion-Stores having 5-10x lower share of exhaled air than schools is a societal failure

a reminder for those who want to participate in our community measurement day tomorrow ;). As usual I am bad with deadlines in this side project so the new website and the report aren't ready yet in the quality I want. - but I'll put a few previews in the thread.

Please note that the charts showing the school values from UK and Austria are the daily means aggregated over many schools, drilling deeper into the worst performing schools and the worst situations looks even worse.

It’s been quite a while since I posted about indoorco2map.com here, but I’ve not been sleeping. 1) new website properly explaining the project will be put online on october 9th 2) a report going in depth into the data collected so far will also be released on the same day (one chart as teaser here)

Finally a slide about the measurements in different types of public transit. I am not surprised nowadays anymore as I've seen the data for a long time, but I initially expected it all to be higher. That trains - which open doors less often than city busses or trams - have higher values makes sense.

Now to some of the previews. First the comparison of CO2-levels for different german super market chains in regards to the type of the building they are in. Either the typical standalone building, being part of a shopping mall or part of a building with a street side entrance.

Supermarkets in shopping malls have generally lower CO2-levels than the other categories - less so for chains which lower ones everywhere obviously. One reason for that is probably that most shopping malls have shared ventilation and clothing and store shops demand high ventilation for odour reasons

One of the reason for that is that I got annoyed a bit myself with the rather long time the app needs to be ready with connecting to the sensor so I spent quite a bit unplanned time on speeding this up. Right now it's in internal beta with a few testers.

Had to look up the clean air projects: mue.incom.org/project/8081 . Some really fun ideas to increase awareness.

3) We’ll do a collective measurement action on October 10th 4) We are now finally in a state where all the pieces (App, Websites, Analysis, Backend) are in a state where it makes sense to start trying to grow the user base actively so I'll start working on that way more (especially on Instagram)

I doubt we will have anything ready in Germany by then.

I don't think I agree with The Left on much, but they are no threat to the democratic norms of the country -- as indeed the very institutions of said democracy have concluded. Merz' body is in 2026, his mind still lives in the 1990s. He can't help himself.

I am determined to prove that you can be largely anti-AI but also not be an asshole. The attitudes of some people on this site will NOT win over any minds or win you over any favours. If you insult someone, you are doing it to a real person. And it sucks!
