Ohio voters with absentee ballots still waiting at home have one week to get them in. Secretary of State Frank LaRose says hand-delivering ballots to a county board of elections or its drop box may be safer than mailing them now. About 235,000 ballots remain unreturned. Photo: AP

JUST POSTED: Today at The NYT we are publishing a major investigation into how President Trump used his executive powers to expose millions of Americans to greater cancer risks. A six month-long investigation built on more than 10,000 pages of FOIA records. Read it www.nytimes.com/2026/10/24/c...

I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

Yet another reason atop the mountain of reasons we should have a 27 member court with randomly assigned panels of 9 justices to hear cases And this one comes with bipartisan logic!

James Grimmelmann@jtlg.bsky.social

Because four of the Justices have book contracts with a party's corporate parent, the Supreme Court LACKS A QUORUM to hear BMG v. Vetter, and one of the worst copyright decisions in recent memory is affirmed by default. It's just one bad look after another. www.supremecourt.gov/docket/docke...

I have spent this week in week 1 of the Food Systems Leadership Institute's fellow program - improving my skills, learning leadership strategies, and learning about the trends affecting higher education and the global nexus of food/ag/environment. This was both alarming and invigorating.

This is a gut punch. Curtis Flowers has died. His story is one of gross injustice. At least he had some years of freedom but far too few.

Curtis Flowers, a Black man who spent more than 22 years in prison and was on death row in Mississippi before the U.S. Supreme Court threw out his conviction and death sentence, has died.

I have trained one of the other evil social media sites so it pretty much only shows me Jacob Collier videos and cats. I have won the internet.

This is appalling.

1,200 sexual assault cases were filed at Cornell from 2018 to 2024. Most of those found responsible received minor sanctions that allowed them to remain on campus, such as probation or training. Only 7 ended in expulsion or dismissal. www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...

The next five graphs are even less convincing, and the argumentation becomes even weaker. It was almost impossible for me to imagine how a seemingly intelligent person could have written it—but I found a secret clue buried in the text itself.

Important note about standard of evidence commonly used in university student discipline systems. It is NOT the same as in criminal or even civil law. It's just "preponderance of the evidence" or "more likely than not." 1/

This is important for conduct like sexual misconduct, stalking, and other forms of violence because it enables the university to act quickly to keep other people on the campus safe be removing a student found responsible for such actions. They are not going to jail, so burden of proof is lower 3/

But the consequence is significant and rapid. A good student discipline system keeps the community safe, and sends strong signals to all students about what behaviors are expected of them as members of the community. 4/4

"Responsible parties" that could not be charged in criminal cases because evidence does not meet "beyond a reasonable double" can certainly be found responsible for having violated university "prohibited conduct" and, if conduct was serious, dismissed. 2/

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

Gambling addiction is a real problem. This is a chilling story showing how companies promote dangerous gambling behavior

Wisdom. Demand for specific job skills will evolve over a student’s lifetime. We need to teach them capabilities that are robust to such disruption.

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

Fascinating. Such a simple intervention - I had no idea iodized salt had such broad and important benefits

Will Masters@willmasters.bsky.social

Iodized salt is a great achievement, easily lost: Adoption in Ethiopia was paused in the late 1990s, permanently harming those born at that time especially in districts with low environmental iodine. Great work from @robel-alemu.bsky.social in @natfood.nature.com, from @tuftsnutrition.bsky.social

If you do get an absentee ballot, you can either mail it back or “You or a near relative may deliver your completed ballot to your county board of elections or your county board of elections's drop box by 7:30 p.m. on Election Day.” In person returns means you don’t have to worry about mail delay

If you have a pet that sometimes snags your clothes, or if you're clumsy like me, I've found Dritz Snag Nab It to be very useful. It's a needle with rough grooves on the tail end. Push the needle through the cloth and it'll pull the snag to the fabric's underside, where it will be hidden.
