the idea that empathy is dangerous has been permeating right-wing spaces for a while, but it's not an actual element of their ideology as much as it's a defense mechanism against confronting the reality of their cruelty

My job is to sit down and enter "Now?" into a computer terminal, which randomly responds "No" or "Yes". I repeat this task for nine hours a day, and twice a month they pay me for the number of Yeses I got. I am quite skilled at this and often speak at professional seminars. Lately I've been very sad

he's saying the quiet part loud here, ai allows white filmmakers to control racial and ethnic minorities in an attempt to make them appear complicit in their own racist slander. paul schrader likes ai because it allows him to have a black actor that he owns.

What Pablo Torre did was ridiculously impressive. Uncovered a conspiracy between rich guys, withstood a propaganda campaign by one of the richest guys in the world with a pretty good reputation, didn't buckle or panic, and just kept reporting. That's some Pulitzerin' right there.

Those of you eager to serve wealthy MLB owners as volunteer Pinkertons won’t like to read this, but as usual Joe Sheehan nails the real problem:

All "Dems should..." posts are hopeless. You gotta take the power from them just like the DSA is doing.

Semi-related, the reason the AI ads that are like "just ask AI" are so offensive is there are people -- your neighbors -- who are often waiting to answer your question and often know a lot, if we'd just ask. The robot isn't a corpus of mom's recipes & dad's tool knowledge.

I’m not going to do it but my theory is a) visibility, it’s so obvious something is wrong and anyone can photograph it and b) relatability, a lot of people have pools so there’s a sense of being smarter than the president and his contractors

this is a great illustration of one of the fundamental insights of democracy — that there is no such thing as "the people" and that majorities are elusive and ever shifting. no election, no decision, is final and treating an election as a final decision is profoundly undemocratic.

The NBA Finals have been pretty great so far, and have given fans basically everything they could have hoped for, with one exception—the chance to think more about President Donald Trump. That ends now.

I don't think there's any question that AI has made all of our lives tangibly worse. Even if you believe this tech is part of our daily lives in the future, you have to concede this is all terrible and needs to be reigned in.

So many people focused on Bari Weiss asking to make protesters look more violent and glossing over Pelley admitting they’d already dug deep for the most violent protester footage they could find. His interview is more of an indictment of corporate media than many want to admit.

I am going to share an observation about this website and then not engage with any replies to it: The chances that any particular person on Bluesky is your mortal enemy worthy of you getting mad about in any prolonged way are very low. I'm not really interested in Star Wars these days, but I *am* fascinated by Disney's mismanagement of Star Wars. Not even in a schadenfreude way, but as a grotesquerie. The stripping down of this cultural artifact into saleable bits, the turning the nob back and forth and looking at the crowd stuff.

If I were trying to sell AI to the public I would be saying “it’s a useful way to write code faster and automate some tedious tasks that couldn’t be automated well before” and instead they’re running with “get on board or get left behind” and “we WILL eliminate your job.”
