I don't really see too much of a gulf between "revenge on the rurals" and "reduce subsidies on rural areas somewhat" policy. A mild pullback is an extinction-level event for these areas, and people are mostly choosing their preferred branding

see also: the idea that there is a strong contingent of people who are dooming too much and whose apathy is hurting climate solutions. by far the super majority of people are not worried enough about climate change and not doing enough to stop it great thread, this brain poison is everywhere

... so you care what they think; they care what you think. The dispute looms large in your lived experience. But that's a very different thing from saying that "people who say decarbonization is too easy" are some kind of substantial social or political problem, that they are producing ...

problem with this is that the level of consequences is different on a neighborhood level site than one ostensibly meant to be the global town square. the negative outcomes are greater and the resulting consequences should be as well. canceling as a thing cant take place on nextdoor like it can here

Meet Crumb, Button, and Clover. A friend in the Bay Area found them behind a gas station. Unfortunately, she isn't able to keep them, so if she can't find someone to adopt them, they will be going to a shelter. Can you help me find them a home? They are in good health and very tame.

if orgs like AIPAC and the ADL work for decades on a rhetorical project to conflate Judaism with Zionism and then the world's only Zionist state commits horrible war crimes the already racsist and the uninformed will either choose anti-zionist and anti-semitic or pro-zionist and not anti-semitic.

Ned Resnikoff@resnikoff.bsky.social

Somehow “anti-Zionism is not antisemitism” has morphed into “antisemitism is totally fine if you dress it up as anti-Zionism,” an evolution which by the way ADL and AJC have facilitated.

i personally think the obvious answer is green tech, abundance and the space economy

Something in this ... if social democrats want to win the culture war, they need to start offering something big and weird and maybe even kinda mental when it comes to how they talk about the future

3. Leadership is about doing what is necessary, not just what is popular. Read literally anything our founders wrote about virtue, and the inherent risks to a society based on democratic processes to sustain the rule of law to the extent that unvirtuous people gain power.

If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

Can I interest you in converting to Star Wars Protestantism? We only acknowledge a canon of the original trilogy, Rogue One, Andor, the Zahn Trilogy, the Dark Horse comics, the 90s Lucasarts games, the West End roleplaying game, and the "Tales from..." anthologies.

Bill’s exactly right. 99.9% of climate denial is solution aversion. They don’t want to fix it, but they know that saying “it’s real and serious but I don’t want to fix it” isn’t a great message. So they go with the smoke screen of science denial instead.

Interesting. I was told that both boats that had been struck down were verified to be carrying narcotics and had connections to criminal groups, but we couldn’t see any of the totally real evidence. Surely fishing would be perfectly safe under such conditions?

great news! you're not actually seeing karl rove, john yoo, and david frum criticize the administration's lawlessness more stridently than dem leadership. you, reader, were infected with rabies by a brown bat 36 hours ago and this is all just the virus working its way through your nervous system

this is a comforting thing to believe if you have the political inclinations you're likely to have if you're reading this, but is unfortunately not true. alternative medicine is huge in Germany and the UK for example.

The incredible and baffling power of the woo woo wellness bullshit in America can be laid directly at the feet of our ghoulish for profit healthcare system. They don’t believe this shit to anywhere near the same degree in countries with universal healthcare

yeah today it's a reactionary thing mostly, but for a long fuckin' time until *very* recently there was way too much tolerance for this shit in left and liberal spaces. from "oh it's not harming anyone" to "different ways of knowing". RFK jr fucking came from that milieu.

I am going to be a massive humorless asshole about woo-woo shit, no matter how seemingly harmless, for the rest of my life due to this. astrology, homeopathic medicine, etc etc it's all bullshit and it's not fucking harmless. there are people who will die due to this who would have otherwise lived.

they wont care about $8 Oreo or whatever if their rent and child care costs are lowered substantially. I get that it's really frustrating that people don't know as much about the issues as you or I do but calling them stupid is not going to work. even if it's true. we do need to actually kill glonzo

they are wrong in the details but they are correct in that affordability is a problem, and has been for a while. sure, we can't touch grocery margins but we can go after housing, healthcare, child care and transportation which are the actual largest line items in people's budget.

groceries and gas are expenses that people have to deal with multiple times a week and are very easy to track on a week-to-week basis so any increases, even if they're a small proportion of their income, are very noticeable. these concerns are nullified if affordability generally is tackled.

I agree that people don't know exactly what they want and are not well versed in policy, but I also think it's fair to ask what you would do instead of meeting them where they're at currently? it seems flattening to say that low info people only care about groceries. they care about affordability.
