California recently passed, and Colorado and NY recently introduced, age verification legislation targeting OS providers that is so imprecisely written that it's unclear how to comply. If you live in one of those states, contact your state senator and rep asking them to oppose this legislation.

A few days ago, I coded a floating-point package for the CP1610 processor, and then I made a brand new BASIC interpreter for the Mattel Intellivision ECS because I wasn't satisfied with the speed of the original 🤪✌️ #retro #retrogaming #intellivision nanochess.org/ecs_basic.html

'Cello' comes from 'violoncello'. This Italian word has a funny literal meaning: "little big viola". That's because it's a double derivative of 'viola': viola > violone (big viola) > violoncello (little big viola). The part '-cello' is only a suffix. Here's more about it, 'violin', and 'fiddle':

And what was that all-female space mission 60 years ago? That would be Vostok 6, which had Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova doing a three-day solo flight (during which she, you know, actually operated the spacecraft)

A crew of six women, including pop star Katy Perry and Jeff Bezos's fiancé Lauren Sanchez, is set to blast off today on an 11-minute Blue Origin flight. It marks the first all-female space mission in 60 years — hailed as a breakthrough for gender equality in space tourism.

The Zilog Z280 microprocessor. Able to address 16 megabytes of memory, and with MMU for 64k code area and 64k data area. It wasn't so popular, so it ceased manufacturing, but for some reason, Zilog sent all datasheets and manuals to oblivion. Check bitsavers. #zilog

58. Pagans by James Alistair Henry. Alt-history crime? I LOVED IT! The Normans never conquered England, Africa is the leading superpower, Britain is divided up btween Celts, Saxons, and Norse. Very gritty crime story (defund these cops omfg) but the attention to detail for the worldbuilding!!!

Saw this absolutely magnificent first edition of the Italian printing of Thomas Gray's lyrical poems, dated Florence 1784, signed "Reading's Library" in 1838 and also someone named G. Angelucci, at my local used bookstore.

Someone should tell my mom, who was sent away from her home in the bustling heart of Chennai, a city known for its British military outpost, to her native village in South India — because of concerns about Japanese bombing raids. Or her best friend's husband, whose family fled the Japanese in Burma.

Meta's lack of content moderation is worse than I thought, so I'd encourage everyone to make their profiles private if they're still on IG/Threads. I've spent the day dealing with bullying and violent threats because people didn't want me studying African American English.

Did not expect the curse of the ancient mariner to be part of our timeline, but this seems very on brand for 2025.

This fragment of proverbs in both Sumerian and Akkadian — languages of ancient Mesopotamia — preserves an early reference to period care. “Everything was fine, and then she brought in a sanitary napkin.” In Sumerian, the pad is a garment called a nig-dara, and in Akkadian, it’s a ulāpu “rag”.
