Trump held a rally in Gaston County, NC a few weeks ago. And now, that county has the largest increase in Black vote share of the early vote in the country. Not saying the two are connected, but I have to admit it made me laugh.

Chief Justice Newby is on the campaign trail with GOP judicial candidates, defying ethics rules. Judges aren’t supposed to endorse candidates or give them money, unless they’re also on the ballot. But Newby effectively controls the Judicial Standards Commission. So he can do what he wants. #ncpol

The JSC actually recommended discipline for two Republican judges who admitted to violating the ethics rules. But Newby and the other GOP justices shut that down and let them off the hook. We only found out because ProPublica reported it. Newby is corrupt.

The article has a good rundown of Newby’s ethical shortcomings and his influence in the legislature. In 2024, lawmakers packed the JSC. Around the same time, Newby pushed an investigation into Justice Anita Earls (chapter 19 in my book).

North Carolina is shaping up to be a Democratic blowout. Early voting turnout is up a lot, but is actually *down* for registered Republicans

North Carolina’s Supreme Court election is pivotal in the fight against Republican gerrymandering. If Justice Anita Earls wins reelection this year, Dems would need to flip just two of the three Republican seats up in 2028 to gain a majority and strike down the GOP’s gerrymanders for 2030

NEW: State courts remain a powerful bulwark for democracy when Donald Trump, Republicans, and the federal courts seek to undermine fair elections, civil rights, and the rule of law. We detailed 8 states with key supreme court elections to watch next month: www.the-downballot.com/p/how-voters...

Scoop: At a secret meeting this summer, an aide to Stephen Miller laid out Trump administration's plan to make it easier for states to round up and institutionalize mentally ill homeless people — by pushing a drastic policy change that would weaken the rights of millions of disabled Americans.

I didn’t mention this, but the judges cited the NC Supreme Court’s 2024 decision to upend early voting after presidential candidate RFK requested it to justify this last-minute chaos. SCOTUS has already smacked down this panel twice in this case. They’ll probably do it again. 🤞

NEW: Missouri Republicans are asking courts to help it expand a doctrine traditionally aimed at restraining federal court intervention. And the consequence could give legislatures near-absolute control over federal elections by limiting when courts can enforce state constitutional restraints.

democracydocket.comIn Missouri gerrymander fight, GOP wants to vastly expand Purcell — giving state lawmakers nearly unchecked power over electionsTheir argument has echoes of the dangerous independent state legislature theory, which would give state lawmakers nearly total power over election rules, and which the U.S. Supreme Court has rejected ...

It’s really insane that the 8th Circuit won’t stop trying to insert itself into this gerrymandering fight to help the GOP. It’s purely a matter of state law, no federal issue there at all. Even SCOTUS said so. SCOTUS! Unbelievable….

The courts already allowed this law to go into effect, even though a lower court struck it down. Arrowood points out how inappropriate it is for appellate courts to do this. This is a great example of why the Court of Appeals election is so important, this year and in 2028.
