A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Wow watching the cricket and there's a sort presentation on breast cancer in Pakistan. Women in that country are likely to have cancer 20 years earlier and accounts for 50% of all cancer cases in the country.

Really interesting thread

1/ There’s an instructive debate underway in the open review pages of @egu.eu journal Ocean Science. It’s about whether we can tell if the #AMOC is already on a trajectory towards collapse. What I think it really teaches is how scientists judge evidence, & why that differs from assessing risk. 🧵

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Airbnb is banning its hosts from making guests do things like “stripping the bed, taking trash offsite, or washing and putting away dishes.” The hosts....are not taking it well: www.wired.com/story/airbnb...

Sure, we should, if we can (many cannot). But as I keep pointing out, the government itself is making no provision at all. No stockpiles, no back-up, no alternative sources. It's individuating the response to a collective problem, and that never ends well. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Old enough to remember this event fairly well. The patronising arrogance of the NCB and Government still shocks. But Grenfell, amongst others, shows not much has really changed.

Wednesday is 60 years since the #Aberfan disaster. This documentary focuses on the action that the community took against the British Coal Board, along with the latter's greed and cover ups. #WelshHistory 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Aberfan: The Village That Fought Back - BBC iPlayer share.google/MZAf0oCbssrD...

Sixty years, tomorrow. They gave the man in charge a knighthood. They made the local community pay for the remembrance garden. No-one held to account. I always think of the dinner lady, Nansi, who shielded five kids with her body and died in the process but they all lived. #Aberfan

Jail time for people who stand on the left on tube escalators. Public stoning for people who walk at you looking at their phone. Stay tuned for more mad, unenforceable policy ideas aimed at minor daily irritations.

Bit misleading 1. How much are you taking of energy bills and how. If it's the price cap many of us have fixed and the cap rises in a few months anyway. 2. Only works if you cap the price to 10p below current rates 3. The 5p on your restaurant bill - 5p! Basically a rounding adjustment.

I am literally dreading the next three weeks. I am dreading the news coverage after Nov 3rd even more. This is a worthwhile read. There is nothing new here but it succinctly sums up what possibly, even probably, may occur over the next 18 days. www.jackhopkinsnow.com/p/he-already...

Holy cow the schools are changing the sex of American kids in school? And thought they went to school to just get shot.

Again, this seems to be Republicans' big closing message for the midterms, so it's worth asking -- what the fuck are they talking about. Ask any parent with a kid in public schools if they'll so much as give them an Advil without written and signed permission. Then show them this insane shit.
