I guess this explains the oddly coercive tone of the owl.

Friendly reminder that Duolingo was initially concieved to trick people into translating articles for free, which they later used as training data for MTL algorithms. Duolingo's primary purpose has NEVER been about teaching you a language, even from the start! slate.com/technology/2...

I think their first mistake was taking a stenography course instead of going to journalism school.

It probably has to suck a little for the WH correspondents who didn’t get banned. Where did they go wrong to not get a ban?

This comic is exactly how it feels to talk with an AI booster I know you have these studies, but they're old! The models are sooooo much better now, so stuff done more than 3 months ago doesn't count. Also, a guy I know told me it made him 100x more productive, which is impossible but I believe him

I think it’s important that we acknowledge that Mitch McConnell is already dead and they’re hiding him so that Gov Beshear doesn’t get to appoint a replacement.

There are only two file formats: disguised zips and renamed text files. JSON? Text. EPUB? Zip. CSV? Text. EXE? Zip. SVG? Text. DOCX? Zip. ICS? Text. APK? Zip.

@jenmsft.bsky.social I swear I tried to help myself before bugging you: Why is it so difficult to manipulate Start Menu and Taskbar pins with Intune? It seems like such a standard use case and I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. I can’t add or remove individual pins, only wholesale replace.

Jira: “You can use markdown. Try it out!” Me: Drops two pages of markdown. Jira: Parses absolutely none of it.

Writing Markdown files is a 10x engineer skill that you must devote your life to training at now, or you will never catch up. Use single asterisks to italicize and double asterisks to bold.

Years ago, a friend asked me why billionaires want MORE money when they could never spend the tiniest fraction of what they have. My answer is that they want immunity. The immunity to do literally any horrific they want without consequence. Nothing I've seen since has changed my mind.

I definitely feel like the torture prison thing isn’t being explored enough. We know about CECOT; where else are they sending these people?

This post is unavailable.

They were pretty clear about it last week, too.

I don’t even know how they could more forcefully assert that they don’t care about human lives — but ESPECIALLY don’t care about the lives of the poor and minorities most affected by industrial pollution — than to rewrite the cost-benefit calculations to explicitly set the value of those lives to 0.

/9 Anyway, a substantial project of the Right is to make it dangerous, expensive, and ideally illegal to speak the truth about them. Don’t give up an inch of ground.

/8 Some people will refuse to accept this. These people are (charitably) uninformed or angry, or (more often) ignorant and dishonest. If it’s on X, which was the hub of “it’s defamatory to call Rittenhouse a murderer,” it’s dishonest AND ignorant.

We’re not a serious country

Chris Stanford@stanfordc.bsky.social

Mr. Rubio said switching back to Times New Roman would “restore decorum and professionalism to the department’s written work.” Calibri is “informal” when compared to serif typefaces like Times New Roman and “clashes” with the department’s official letterhead. www.nytimes.com/2025/12/09/u...

Grabbing someone from a flight that is already leaving the country is absolutely insane.

Jon Cooper@joncooper-us.bsky.social

“We are heartbroken to announce we have to cancel our upcoming European tour,” wrote Texas psych-rockers Lord Buffalo. “Our drummer, Yamal Said, who is a Mexican citizen & lawful permanent resident of the US, was forcibly removed from our flight to Europe by CBP at Dallas/Fort Worth Int’l Airport.”

This seems like it should violate some state laws, for which the president cannot issue a pardon. Why is no one doing anything about this?

Ben Wikler@benwikler.bsky.social

If you don't want to see this horrible garbage happen in every future high-stakes election, make sure it demonstrably fails in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race by helping elect Susan Crawford

An absolutely terrifying take.

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

Wow. Judge Howell is worried that if she orders DOGE to leave the USIP building it could turn into an “armed standoff” over unwillingness to vacate, and points out law enforcement has shown willingness to help DOGE. Asks if we’ll need foreign mediators to come in.

This is absolutely incredible. That VP needs to be arrested and the company sued into oblivion. There is absolutely no excuse for them to have retained a physical key after their contract was terminated and using that key is criminal.

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

Inter-con, USIP security contractor, had contract terminated by USIP but still had one physical key to building. DOGE went to contractor VP's house and said "you either let us in or we're gonna cancel all your other government business." Inter-con then turned on USIP, and used key to let DOGE in.

Just read chapter one of Under the Smoke Strewn Sky to 5 and 4. I have, at times, wondered if they’re too young for this series. 5 does not handle scary things well. From this chapter, I wonder if I’m about to traumatize them, but they’re invested. @seananmcguire.bsky.social how badly did I fuck up?
