I emailed Patrick Healy, assistant managing editor for standards and trust at NYT, to ask why their story about a House report with new details of rape allegations against the President of the United States included neither those details, nor a single use of the word "rape." archive.is/1s9AM

Orban, Vucic, Bolsonaro... Farage shrinking away in a mire of scandals... if the Americans can avoid fucking this up completely and give Donnie the pasting he deserves next week, this could end up being a year that ends up giving us some hope for the future. Christ knows it's been a while.

In his Daily Mail column today, describing Trump as "toast," Richard Littlejohn mocks the President's attempted annexation of Greenland as being mad, using the phrase "nurse!" Here's what Littlejohn wrote about it when Trump first suggested it

So I just got served an ad for @attio.com, a CRM provider. The point of the ad was 'our CRM is built to be scalable for AI agents'. That's fairly unobjectionable. The line at the end of the ad? "People with unreasonable ambition deserve unreasonable power" I can think of counterexamples.

Fascinating that as even as other Republicans who long ago sold their souls to MAGA still have enough baseline political acumen to see how poisonous this is, Vance is completely oblivious. It isn't just that he has no principles, decency, or moral compass, he's also really fucking bad at politics.

Probably they'll keep finding useful idiots, but there's a small chance that if these owners can completely divorce normal people from the clubs that once represented them and their cities, you'll just have the ultrawealthy in corporate boxes peering out over empty stands, watching a dying game. 8/8

This is not to over-romanticise the past: as soon as football broke out of the English public school environment it was inseparable from urbanisation, industry, and capitalism. But it at least then (ie the 20th century) it existed in part to serve the masses while also serving the owners. 5/?

These days it only serves the owners, and to the extent that it serves 'ordinary' fans, it best serves those who are happiest to play the part of volunteer propagandists - see all the Man City fans going out of their way to defend people who have a level of wealth that is unfathomable to them 6/?

This ties into the trend of live events becoming the preserve of the affluent/ultra-wealthy. They've got all the *stuff* they need, so the next thing they get are experiences. Sports clubs/concert promoters/museum operators are happy to bend the knee to serve them at the expense of all others 3/?

For sports clubs the effect is two-fold, since players (and their wives) are more easily persuaded to move to these places based on the lifestyle. See also how easy it is for London clubs to attract talent, and a possible rise of some/all of the non-PSG teams from Paris: see Paris FC's ownership 4/?

More useful than tourist €s is a wealthy local clientele with elements of the ultrarich/exclusive class. It matters not how big your ground/fanbase is if the corporate offering is enticing enough to attract sponsors/partners who'll more than replace the gate receipts of 40k+ fans every week. 2/?

Today we launch the first episode of my podcast. I interviewed Whitney Mitchell, whose fiancé and caretaker Garrett Foster was murdered at a BLM protest in 2020. Foster's killer was convicted by a jury and given a 25-year sentence. Then Texas Gov. Greg Abbott pardoned him.

I feel like I should consolidate my concerns with the Gladwell policing piece into one place, after scattering them all over this site last night. So, first: Crime has fallen dramatically, to historic or near-historic lows, at current (and sometimes falling) policing. What ELSE has driven that?

John Pfaff@johnpfaff.bsky.social

I do feel like one of the biggest underappreciated crime victories we've had is that since its peak in 1991, total official property crime has fallen by 60%. Not the rate. The total amount. As populations grew. The rate of property crime is down over 70% from 1991 to 2025.

Little to add here, and Ronaldo *always* had an objectively unhealthy level of ambition, but this comment from reddit is still worth stealing: "Said it before, will say it again- Messi's 2022 World Cup win broke his brain completely. He knew at that moment that he’ll forever be 2nd place to him."

Nice to see this getting some attention. It's completely true, and I dearly wish more journalists understood where these common narratives about AI actually come from.

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

The U.S. AI industry is being run by a batshit rationalist sex cult, and no, I am not being hyperbolic - they’re genuinely Like That:

What an absolute clown show. Of course some people will fall for it like they fell for all the other lies, only to appear in news articles a few months later: "I needed that $5k to pay off my medical/utility/whatever bill but I never got it now I'm bankrupt... why would Donny betray me like that?"

Realizing the extent to which this is true wildly changed my opinions about how to deal with Trumpism, since they're never going to be satisfied unless they're actively dominating everyone else. You can't give them some concessions and go back to the status quo: they're reactionary revolutionaries.

My next book has a whole section on the psychology behind "People becoming successful by simply lying about already being successful then charging other people to learn their 'secrets' about how to become successful".
