Flávio Bolsonaro had his passport confiscated by the Brazilian fed police as his brother Eduardo told him to flee to the US. He is tied to paramilitary gangs, is being investigated & lost his legislative immunity when he left the Senate to run for president. paydayreport.com/brazilian-fe...

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

I think the lesson from Lula is not never talk about the opposition; it's articulate a positive vision that's basically, We Can Just Do Things. That's why Mamdani-ism is so popular - voters have an intrinsic sense that their electeds have agency they're not using

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

i'm gonna be mean for a second and say if you're trusting kalshi or polymarket for your political analysis you're a fucking dipshit

Dear every non-profit that takes recurring donations: I am begging you to make it easier to update my payment info. It is 2026. The backend you’re using has the option. And using it as a tactic to get me to talk to someone who will pressure me to increase my donation sucks.

I am not kidding: if the Dems did a full court press on civic pride instead of patriotism, they would clean house. Patriotism is poisoned by nationalism, but “hey, let’s fill these potholes and maybe tell people not to litter”: it would crush.

The WPA was an economic necessity, but look what it did for the American identity. It was the last time we had anything close to a shared aesthetic, and it was everyone’s because it legally couldn’t be owned. And it centered on civic pride.

In a few traditions master craftspeople add a deliberate flaw to their otherwise perfect works, in order to show humility. I assume that’s why they still haven’t done anything about Hugo Weaving’s “American” accent on Slow Horses.

I’ll object to one of these: ‘butt naked’ for ‘buck naked’ has lasted long enough to be a colloquialism, if not just straight up drift.

Merriam-Webster@merriam-webster.com

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

I mark my drift away from NPR at the point when they started broadcasting those “Intelligence Squared” debates. Deeply off-putting entertainment programming masking as something serious. (Don’t care if it was PRI/APM/whatev. It’s all NPR to me)

"Debate" has been corrupted by codifying it into a competitive sport imo; at this point it is rarely a method for good faith actors to hit upon best solutions or refine a shared reality; it's mostly a vector for bad faith actors to keep failed and destructive ideas in perpetual zombie currency.

The fetishisation of "debate" as some sort of grand public good that everyone should do is so thoughtless and jarring to me because the more you actually do it the more it becomes apparent that genuinely constructive debate is actually a pretty niche thing.

My support of trans rights is absolutely idealistic, but it is simultaneously fully pragmatic. Conservatives will not stop at trans people: setting back the clock does not have a stop point.

While I’ve never been, I have a big soft spot for Finland and Estonia. There’s something so admirable about small countries with strong identities that come from love of a place rather than blind nationalism. Especially coming from a place like the US.

I watched George W Bush stand in the skulls of Americans killed on 9/11 and the Iraqis he slaughtered and use it as a campaign backdrop. I watched McCain mock women who need abortion. I watched Romney pal around with a birther and then that birther led the GOP. Fuck all of them. They’re not good.

It’ll always be weird to me that Trump and David Miscavige seem to have NO relationship. No simmering rivalry over some piece of Florida real estate, no mutual list of donors/members they associate with, no game-recognize-game friendship. It’s a “case of the dog who didn’t bark” gap in the record.

I applaud stuff like this happening in the “ritziest neighborhoods.” These fuckers demonstrably don’t care about us, why should I care if they get anxiety from being adjacent to poors? I genuinely don’t give a fuck about a rich person’s stolen Vespa, other than hoping the thief got a good price.

I was raised with the value that illness is weakness and weakness is illness and both are the worst things you can be. In consequence I’ve spent most of my life papering over mental illness and being disgusted with myself for weakness. If you’re somehow young and reading this: don’t do that.

If my partner wasn’t recovering from surgery I’d be researching voluntary commitment right now. Something has gone really wrong with me and it’s scary. I have never felt so beholden to stress in my entire life and nothing is working.
