My favorite Appalachian fact is that, unlike the Himalayas, there are no shells on top of the Appalachians because they predate shells.

it really sucks how we’re finally seeing a US regime put people under 60 in leadership positions, and all those people are invariably both stunningly stupid and wildly evil

The 'With These Hands' trail features plaster casts which reproduce artefacts from the Mohenjo-daro ruins, one of the great cities of the Indus Valley Civilization (3000-2500 BC). Sold as cultural souvenirs, these casts connect modern makers with disappearing histories. This seal was donated in 1955.

Amazing results in New York remind me how disappointing it is that congestion pricing efforts have stalled in San Francisco. With congestion pricing, Muni service could be robustly funded, transit ridership would climb, and traffic through much of the Bay Area would significantly decrease.

Mark D. Levine@marklevinenyc.bsky.social

Year 1 data on congestion pricing in Manhattan… * Vehicle traffic: -11% * Foot traffic: +3.4% * Storefront vacancy: -0.9% * Pollution: -22% * Revenue for mass transit: $548M So YES this has been a huge success.

I think AR has the possibility to absorb people totally because it’s basically one step closer to having a phone in your face 24/7, a natural state for most people right now.

Companies are doing this because VR has been the biggest tech hardware/feature flop since 3D TVs. But AR certainly will work! Pinky swear! Totally it will! It's completely different! It's entirely something else!

[tv commercial opens] [a woman comes into a kitchen and puts down her grocery bags] “as a busy mom, I’m always looking for faster, cheaper ways to launder hundreds of millions of dollars”

Eric Trump: "You're sitting there saying, 'Why can't I send hundreds of millions of dollars worth of bitcoin overseas instantly or receive it instantly with virtually no fees?' Bitcoin is the way of the future."

One of the best things I ever got from colorware was a pencil that glows bright orange under a black light. I’ve lost it in my apartment and found it by shining a black light like I was searching for scorpions in the desert.

I think I need to drive this home more: programming didn't used to be like this—even for complex, networked apps with a large amount of features and complex user interfaces. And apps didn't have thousands of dependencies like many even simple ones do now.

IMO the reason why people yearn for tools that generate code is that programming is broken—everything now is giant layer cakes of huge, complex and intransparent frameworks designed by and for large teams in giant tech companies.

After I did this I sent it out for fabrication and I’ve just been waiting to see it move from Koeln, Germany. Nothing so far, hoping it’s not stuck because of tariff shenanigans.

I still kind of want to make this. My test tiles weren’t nearly this cute.

Honestly not bad. Great floor for my cathedral dedicated to secular humanism and geological evidence of the true age of the earth and the universe. I'll put it in Boise.

Vinay Prasad overrode the recommendations of a panel of scientists who said that 2025-2026 COVID19 vaccines should be recommended for everyone over the age of 12 years. COVID19 remains a serious public health threat. He will get people killed. He doesn’t care. His ego wins, always.

I was in Chicago for the wet bulb event of 95’. No one warned us how dangerous it would be. Now the planet is MUCH warmer and warming faster so please be weather aware. Hydrate and don’t take long walks unless you have guaranteed, immediate access to air conditioning.
