Kids have an incredible sense of right and wrong. We would all do well to listen to our kids more often.

This morning, I focused on my parents' reaction, but I had another really important conversation a year ago today. @shannonstraw.bsky.social and I talked to our kids and asked them what we should do.

This was one of the first reactions I got to the indictment. Knowing that my parents stood with me made it a little easier for me to continue to stand on my own. It helped me believe my community would stand with me whenever the news broke publicly.

A year ago I got what I originally thought was a scam call. The caller claimed to be FBI, said that I had been indicted for a conspiracy, and told me to schedule a time to self surrender if I did not want to be arrested at my home. It was not a scam call, at least not in the manner I suspected.

We explained that if I said I didn't do anything wrong, the process would be harder and--if a jury didn't agree with me--the consequences would be worse for our family. The kids told me to fight, because I didn't do anything wrong and because other people couldn't fight like I could.

We explained to the kids (at the time 6 and 10) that I could say I did something wrong and probably get out of the case without serious consequences (a plea deal or deferred prosecution agreement) or I could say I didn't do anything wrong and fight.

But a couple hours after I told my parents I got a short email from my dad: I am proud of you! The times are hard. You have stood up for what we all believe in. Now is the time for all of us to look to stand up to the tyranny that is being pushed upon us.

It's sad that this is the first time I've heard of a right triangle day... and it is likely the last one I will ever see!

None of us has a responsibility to be a hero, but each of us has a moral imperative in this moment to respond with empathy and do what we can to stand up for our neighbors.

In some ways, I agree with @brianstraw.bsky.social that it feels like 10 years. On the other hand, everything from one year ago—the constant alerts of the presence of federal agents, the abduction of our neighbors in broad daylight, the start of this case—feels so fresh.

Jason Meisner@jmetr22b.bsky.social

One year ago today, prosecutors in Chicago secured the "Broadview Six" indictment, a case held up by the Justice Department as a righteous defense of the "rule of law." Fast forward 12 months, it's about something much different. "It's been quite a year." www.chicagotribune.com/2026/10/23/b...

At the end of this year, I find myself incredibly grateful for everyone in my community who stood with me and supported me. I could not have continued to stand and fight in court without my community standing with me. Thank you.

Andrew Boutros asked the grand jurors to raise their hand if they were “struggling with a certain type of cases, such as the immigration cases” because “we have a different procedure for that.” With that preface, the grand jury handed down an indictment after the AUSAs third presentation.

Someone recently asked me “if you knew you would lose a year of your life to a criminal prosecution, would you have still showed up at Broadview?” I paused before answering, because this year has been hard, but I responded: “Yes. This is probably the most important thing I have ever done.”

Listen all the way to the end. Folks who swear by Christian Nationalist ideologies lack a basic understanding of our Constitution.

Abundant Housing Illinois@abundanthousingil.bsky.social

The Shape Oak Park study found a plethora of nonconforming multi-family homes in areas with R1-R4 zoning, which allows only single-family housing to be built. These "middle housing" types would not be permitted to be built (or rebuilt) today. (Nonconforming homes are shown in orange on the map.)
