my therapist casually mentioned a lesswrong post the other day. is this good/bad

it’s crazy how fast our brains get used to things; frontier models have been good at making animated videos for what; a few weeks? and i’m already tired of all the animationslop

i hope the next big releases from the labs are safety breakthroughs

Lots of ecosystem players (Nvidia, Huggingface) vague posting about a lot of releases in the near future. Rumors include thinky, muse spark, and Chinese players who haven’t dropped in a while. Fable 5.5 and whatever OpenAI is cooking expected too at any moment.

i received this book in the mail with no recollection of ordering it. i have heard of it, and have a dreamlike memory of looking it up on an online bookshop, but i can find no record of purchasing it

With effective altruism in the news a lot more, I wrote about the version of EA I'm most excited about and the direction I'd like the movement to go. These 6 points are my vision of EA in a nutshell:

no, no, I said i'm a DUELIST. your insipid theory of consciousness offends my honor and I demand satisfaction

i know we are all eating from the trash can of ideology but some of y’all are really gorging yourselves

the more i read critiques of EAs & rationalists, the more i become convinced that most of their opponents don’t care all that much about truth

so many of the critiques spend like half the time saying “but they’re weird”. hard to take seriously

From the very beginning, software engineering has been about automating other people’s work. Every single commercial software program is valuable because it takes over some task you would have to pay a human to do. https://www.seangoedecke.com/software-engineers-dont-get-to-be-luddites-about-ai/

seangoedecke.comSoftware engineers don't get to be Luddites about AIMany software engineers are righteously angry about AI. It’s understandable to be upset that the skills you built your professional identity around are getting…

are any AI safety people active on bluesky? lots of them of X but i’d prefer not to open that website!

There's something profoundly depressing in realizing and being continually reminded again and again that the public intellectual ecosystem doesn't necessarily reward having something to say so much as having something people feel compelled to react to.

we haven’t solved cybersecurity with human adversaries, and nadella thinks we will solve it when the adversary is much smarter than us? what happens if a superintelligent model is not aligned and we got the security wrong?

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

Satya Nadella says companies should assume AI models are compromised (rogue agents) and build systems that limit their permissions, verify their actions and enable a human to shut them down. Rogue agents are a software security problem, not something we should expect “alignment” alone to solve.

i think everyone should keep making confident strong claims about consciousness on social media. i’m sure everyone has read the prior art, thought about it a lot, and are contributing something novel to the debate

i bought this copy of accelerando for £3 in a charity shop, and it turns out it’s a signed copy!

this book is fun so far btw. feels like it was written for a very particular Type Of Guy who’s me

social media rewards the appearance of understanding far more than it rewards actual understanding. that’s why it’s making us all stupid

Amos Wenger@fasterthanli.me

Kind of crazy how you don't need to understand anything about anything to be taken seriously around here.

i watched it follows and i really related to the guy who follows

i finally found a great use case for hermes: checking my doctor's janky website every hour and notifying me when there are appointments available

it’s cool that someone built an open-source version of the adobe suite but those apps were dead anyway. no-one’s gonna be manually editing SVGs in five years

now that echofeed is shutting down, some of you might be looking for an alternative way to post your RSS feeds to bluesky or mastodon. i built http://parrot.garden/ for this a while back. it’s totally free and will stay that way! feature requests are welcome :)
