When the expansion Winnipeg Jets played the Canadiens at home for the first time on 15 December 1979, the Jets promoted the occasion with Tuxedo Night. The fans dug out the formal wear to honour Les Glorieux. Then they beat Montreal 6-2. Tonight’s soirée is a classy caper, also. Heritage, indeed.

This is horrific. And unsurprisingly the work of a "conservative" multimillionaire. Other adjectives might include creepy, prurient, dictatorial and abusive, not to mention, of course, transphobic. Once more with feeling: we need to get the money out of politics. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”

This afternoon, my husband & I walked up to a newish pharmacy in our neighbourhood to get flu & Covid shots. The pharmacy is located in a long-vacated branch of the Royal Bank, in a slightly tatty strip mall. The young pharmacist told us he emigrated to Canada 10 years ago, from Nigeria via the UK.

"THE CLOSING STAGES of midterm season have highlighted one of the ugly contradictions of the Trumpist movement: The same people who insist on policing public bathrooms to protect little girls from sexual predators are also smearing an actual child rape survivor."

This new electoral vídeo from Pedro Sánchez is quite something. Standing in front of Guernica defending the anti-war stance of his government, limiting military expenditure, denouncing the atrocity of Gaza. English subtitles.

So, Albertans are solidly for Canadian unity, but sharply divided in their own province, especially on immigration.

As the count continues, we are getting a clearer picture of the results from Monday's AB referendum: 1. Separation was trounced 2. No real mandate on the heavily pushed Q1-9 Big picture: the Urban-Rural divide Cgy+Edm voted No on all questions Rest of Alberta (combined) voted Yes

John MacKinnon 🇨🇦 reposted

Yes it is. Very sad.

Noticed my book at the front table in Edmonton Airport Indigo. Excellent. Also noted: the airport is very efficiently run by a workforce almost entirely people of colour. Ironic, since a majority of Albertans just voted to reduce immigration. Claiming it’s a drag on the economy. Sad.

There’s only so much you can do for a province that bases its identity and economy on a volitile and declining resource governed by international forces. #cdnpoli #ableg

To the people who are still talking about how Canada is "not taking Alberta seriously" -- what on earth are you talking about? The PM is an Albertan. The leader of the opposition is an Albertan. Our national politics revolve around Alberta's interests and concerns. What else do you want?

Danielle Smith put out a message to UCP supporters on twitter. UCP has to remain united otherwise the NDP wins. And they would destroy Alberta (again). Open borders, defund the police, give taxpayer drugs, censorship of free speech, eco-extremists, and be led by Avi Lewis. x.com/ABDanielleSm...

x.comDanielle Smith (@ABDanielleSmith) on XI hope every UCP member and supporter will watch this video. The referendum is behind us. Albertans gave their answers and our party must honour that mandate. What comes next is the only fight that...

Documents like these are insightful because they suggest the government is knowingly acting out of step with public opinion (and many of their own voters):

Canadians want to prioritize clean energy over fossil fuels, Carney government told in internal report New public opinion research commissioned by federal government shows a majority of Canadians want to see Canada become a clean energy superpower

When the PQ lost the 1980 referendum 60-40, René Lévesque said: “À la prochaine fois.” Danielle Smith, having coddled and pandered to UCP separatists for years, having lost 75-25 in a useless referendum she engineered, pivots to, “Show’s over, folks. Seppies, get out of my party.” Words fail.

Infinite fossil fuel consumption is the tailing pond the smirking, perfidious Danielle Smith is prepared to die in. Bitumen is energy and it’s essential to both Alberta’s ‘way of life’ and Canadian unity, according to her. Solar energy, wind power? Not on her watch.

Chutzpah juiced to levels rarely seen.

Max Fawcett@maxfawcett.bsky.social

Albertans should be furious about this. Danielle Smith: 1) Lowered the threshold for signatures on a petition 2) Extended the duration in which they could be collected 3) Continues to pretend the people who signed the Forever Canada petition wanted a referendum Shameless.

No different than the CAQ scapegoating temporary workers after it asked the federal gov’t to allow it to double the permitted share of temporary foreign workers in Quebec to tackle labour shortages back in 2021-22. These folks rely on voters’ political amnesia.

I will say the rank cynicism of Smith demanding more provincial control over immigration when she was one of the premiers who begged for higher immigration targets just over 2 years ago is a lot to take. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Great (and sadly accurate) line: “I am painfully aware of the power imbalance between facts and feelings in our political discourse and I understand that repeating these truths has the same general outcome as pissing into a gale-force wind.” Article is a good read—highly recommend.

HOT TAKE: Let’s stop spending 100s of millions of dollars to hold referendums to break up a country the vast majority of Canadians love. Our forests are burning, we live among the unhoused, and the superpower to the south is talking annexation (again). There are better ways to spend our money.
