All too often the heroes of such fantasies behave exactly as the villains do, acting with mindless violence, but the hero is on the “right” side and therefore will win. Right makes might.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die. Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

it’s weird that we’re staring down the second unprecedented economic catastrophe in five years and instead of a novel coronavirus that will go on to kill millions of people this one is just “no one was willing to tell him no”

Being an academic as universities seem to be losing our social license is a weird place to be. Universities are absolutely integrated into power networks, but simultaneously those networks are terrified of the potential of critical scholarship and informed free thinkers.

This morning at Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) HQ in DC as mandatory return to office began, this video played on loop for ~5 mins on screens throughout the building, per agency source. Building staff couldn’t figure out how to turn it off so sent people to every floor to unplug TVs.

It is unclear to me how Lu*on thinks the economy works. You can't get milk from a cow you're starving. And if you starve it to death, there's not even a lot of meat for your vulture friends to "capitalize" on.

We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

if I understand American politics correctly, progressivism is something that requires 60 senate votes to work, while national conservatism doesn’t require any votes at all

I let go of my copy of "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" today For a long time I saw that book reflect the difficult childhood I navigated but what Gman actually captured was the story of the person who broke my family & gave me that childhood A victim who became the abuser

I probably don't even need to say this, BUT. Me not posting about every nightmarish thing is not because I am not internally (or externally!) screaming multiple times per day, i just figure you heard about it from 100 other people posting about each new nightmare. I assure you, my soul is cracking.

if they want to go back to the 1950s, we’re bringing the cuisine back to the 1950s too. you put me in the kitchen, I will spend 100% of my time in there finding how much horseradish and shrimp I can put in Jello before God personally comes down here to stop me.

Someone decided that ten minutes is how long public toilets in Auckland parks will stay locked and, having married a man, I can say with great confidence the person who thought "ten minutes is long enough to take a shit" was a woman.

In a human sacrifice to deity there might be at least a mistaken and terrible beauty; in the rites of the moneychangers, where greed, laziness, and envy were assumed to move all men's acts, even the terrible became banal.
