I was a finalist in the Travel Photographer of the Year competition 2024. I can now reveal the image I entered. It is an iPhone selfie taken in Cromford, Derbyshire.

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

When Trump folds, and the BBC wins — which will be soon — get ready for the UK to be a “shithouse country.”

Norway: "I didn't get the Nobel Prize so I don't want anybody from Norway. I don't want anything to do with Norway…Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a shithouse country, actually."

Taking a kid to a Trump rally is child abuse. The way the kid laughs at “Norway is a shithouse country” probably means he’s had a lifetime of poor parenting.

No, they were middle-aged men wearing powdered wigs, elaborately embroidered hostess jackets, silk hose, and shoes with enormous buckles and substantial heels. In other words, our Constitution was written and signed by drag queens.

Vanity — Trump’s ballroom. Sanity — Bike lanes.

Joe Mitchell: "Thank God you're building the ballroom. Thank God you're getting rid of those awful bike lanes. We don't ride bicycles in Iowa."

It’s even a dumb statement for Iowa. The state has an annual bike ride that attracts 50,000 participants. Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, or RAGBRAI. Been staged for years.

Bizarre GB News clip doing the rounds where host Nana Akua and panellist Andy Twelves have an argument in which they keep saying each other's full names.

The woman and her dog walk past our gate reasonably frequently — we live on a popular dog walking route — so next time I see her I shall be pumping her for more stories.

They legged it back to the park to find Yowser, who must have been annoyed his human walked away with another dog! Thing is, the wrong dog had done some good leading…

When Yowser retired he continued living with the family but couldn’t go out on guided walks with the new, younger Guide Dog. Unbeknownst to the dad, Yowser snuck out one day and followed them to the park. People were saying “good boy, Yowser” and the dad assumed they meant the new dog!

So, met a woman walking her dog and told her about Erica’s past. She told me her father lost his sight from mid-40s and thereafter relied on a succession of Guide Dogs, including Yowser (not real name).

On one occasion the dad went to a park and gave Yowser a free run. Minutes go hu. Called Yowser back, out lead and harness back on and walked home with him guiding successfully. Only once back at home was the dad told he’d got the wrong dog!

Done. Pretty easy.

Donald Trump canceled his scheduled Oct. 16 deposition in his lawsuit against the BBC because of "matters of national importance." The BBC alerts the judge that those matters were: a rally in Dalton, Ga. and a fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago.

Trump exhibiting bunker mentality, you could say.

Trump: "The Department of Interior wants to take a terrible and very unsafe golf course, and make it into a great, safe, and prestigious golf course ... They do not need an approval. Work is scheduled to begin IMMEDIATELY!"

The fascist newspaper had been earlier called “The Blackshirt Action,” but was renamed to just “Action!” and was designed to look and read like a mainstream newspaper. It was full of lies, of course, and The Reformer will be likewise.

Yeah, just like that time the Allies supplied bombs to Hitler.

Mike Johnson characterizes Trump providing sanctions relief to Putin as "thinking outside the box"

What do US military leaders* — trained to fight Russia — think about the fact they now have to support Russia? * not Hegseth, obviously.

Those motoring and mainstream journalists believing Musk's clearly ludicrous "flying car" stunt — an actual rocket-propelled Roadster 2 product will literally never get off the ground — must fall for every scam going. Must be exhausting for them.

Doesn't annoy me but I believe it still has power to annoy Brough Superior fans — in David Lean’s 1962 biopic Lawrence of Arabia, Peter O’Toole changed gear with a foot pedal when it should have been a hand-actuated gear change.

And don't get me started on the opening few seconds when Lean showed Lawrence’s death was caused by two boys on bikes coming towards him riding abreast. In fact, the boys rode single file. Lawrence crashed cos he was going too fast; the cyclists were not to blame.

And single file riding in the same direction as Lawrence, that is. His brakes were defective, he had rheumatic wrists and he habitually rode his 100-mph motorbike too fast on public roads, yet two boys (one of whom was hospitalised in thecrash) are still sometimes blamed for killing Lawrence.

Mind you, not a lot in the film was accurate. Real Lawrence was 5 ft 5. Peter O’Toole was 6 ft 3. And movie only showed Lawrence on camels and not Royal Navy ships, Royal Flying Corps aircraft and Rolls-Royce armoured cars.
