The latest in Carr's ongoing effort to exert government control over political information & discourse.
Today former FCC officials issued a statement (supported by @techfreedom.org & @protectdemocracy.org) calling this "a direct attack on free and fair elections."

FCC chief Brendan “Project 2025” Carr threats
“News broadcasters have a First Amendment right to report polling data, even if it proves to be inaccurate, just like they have a First Amendment right to report on Carr and Trump’s own countless lies and distortions” - Freedom of the Press Foundation
Remembering that time when some big name accounts were arguing that X is all good now and the algorithm has been de-Elon'd. Wait, that was yesterday. The same time this was happening.
Saying he'd be cool with Iran nuking my home city is pretty bad but not quite as bad as when Hillary said some trump supporters were deplorable so I can see why the media turned the latter into a major scandal and not the former
"For decades, we've provided election coverage that's based on in-depth political reporting by an experienced team of journalists backed by commentary from political leaders.
But now we're throwing that aside so we can tell you what some of the most irredeemable uninformed gamblers are guessing."

I for one think it’s bad that the president can just say crazy stuff all day every day and 99% of it doesn’t make the news because we’ve normalized having an insane president
Whatever you do, don't smoke an entire brisket at a job interview, it's a lot of equipment to bring in, it takes a really long time to do it right and those conference rooms have notoriously poor ventilation
I’ve been reporting on the CDC for years, and have written about many of its troubles over the past year. I was still shocked by the extent of the staff losses and political interference I found when reporting this one.

Vaccines were once so uncontroversial that McDonald’s restaurants put the childhood immunization schedule on their tray liners.
Now, as the U.S. government sows doubt, preventable diseases could come roaring back.

I found watching Trump’s UN speech today deeply depressing. It is a matter of national shame and humiliation that he is our president. Every country in the world, friend and foe alike, sees we are governed by a vainglorious fool.
Once again, there's a reason they won't spell out how we'd go extinct. Are we getting Jurassic Park'd because the AI is reinventing dinosaurs? Are they getting access to the nuclear codes and hypnotizing the president into using them? They are referring to bank/infrastructure hacks and exaggerating.
[P] I might suggest “the Muppets must put on a variety show with a different guest host each week. Various shenanigans happen both on stage and backstage.”
There are currently no active conversations for a full ‘MUPPET SHOW’ series revival.
Disney, The Muppets Studio and Point Grey Pictures have had difficulties with deciding on a premise for the series that they can all agree on.

Fox News complains that underage teenage girls aren’t getting pregnant enough:
“The problem is teens and young adults. From ages 15-19, the fertility rate is down 70% in the last 2 decades, which means we are telling people who are young not to have babies.”
Flock Safety’s surveillance network has been expanding for years. In recent months, we’ve reported on growing concerns around how US law enforcement is using its cameras, as allegations of misuse pile up.
Here’s a deep dive into how we got here.
For me, the biggest takeaway from Sophie Cunningham’s hard launch into the right-wing culture wars is how *lucrative* bigotry is now. There’s an entire conservative media ecosystem that will turn anyone willing to make transphobia their personal brand into a well-compensated star.
Between October 2025 and July 2026, the U.S. accepted 10,258 refugees.
All but three (3!) were white South Africans.
Regardless of your opinion of South Africa's laws and government, I don't know how you could call this anything other than an explicitly racist policy.
The Trump administration will move ahead with plans to end more than 25 years of sweeping protections for tens of millions of wild, federally managed acres across the U.S. oregoncapitalchronicle.com/2026/08/18/t...
This is nuts. This quote from Bertie Fielding might be the most ridiculously idiotic statement I've come across recently. It's like commissioning an artist to paint something and then saying: "van Gogh did all of the painting. I remain the expert and thought leader behind the piece." 🙄
Dean of Science at Stellenbosch University writes that although AI generates almost all the words for his articles (including this one):
"AI did almost all of the writing. I remain the expert and the thought leader behind the piece."
www.nature.com/articles/d44...
It's really crazy that he gets caught passing off AI-generated content as his own work and then he doubles down on it and defends the practice, trying to make an argument that he's still the author. Seriously, it's just mind-boggling.
Also, he uses the phrase "thought leader" eight times in his article. EIGHT times. Someone who refers to themselves once as a thought leader qualifies as moderately ridiculous. Eight times?!? That's getting into synergies that will melt the brains of tech bro marketing teams. 🤯

I just typed out a comment to a post, re-read it, thought "Oh, right, I'll look like a fucking creep if I post that" and then deleted it, which is a reminder that the reason I came up with "The failure mode of 'clever' is 'asshole'" is because I need the warning as much if not more than other folks
This is 100% why people who've been on X for years now get so weirdly bummed out by Bluesky or any other site.
It isn't that bsky is a 'bubble', it's that being a shithead in the replies gets you an immediate nuclear-block, rather than immediately rewarded with Skinner-box treats
Trump voted by mail in Florida's Republican primary, according to local voting records — even as he continues to rail against mail-in voting with lies of fraud.
there is no such thing as "age verification."
All "age verification" is actually "identity verification."
You can coat it in glitter and "privacy-preserving" wrapping paper.
But in the end, mandating age verification means mandating surveillance be built into software and hardware.
Period.
New in PN: Transgender athletes are a red herring
"None of this discourse happened bc there is a new high-profile trans athlete in the news. Instead, Republicans are starting a culture war to rile up their base, co-opt Dems into agreeing with them, & push trans people out of public life altogether"
"Eight of the biggest oil companies amassed profits of more than $90bn (£67bn) in just three months as the Iran conflict sent energy prices soaring and the emissions-fuelled climate crisis caused deadly heatwaves."
I'm always amused when climate deniers shout, "Follow the money!", as they ridiculously try to claim there is some secret source of funding behind all global warming science that could ever compete with the utterly insane profits from fossil fuel companies (and their very, very well-funded lobby).
"Building Trust, Demonstrating Accountability"... because nothing says 'trust' and 'accountability' like secret playbooks designed to mislead and misdirect the public while trying to obfuscate Flock's spying and very questionable (read: problematic) behavior. 🤨
Exclusive: We obtained a leaked playbook that Flock gives to cops to coach them on "how to speak to city council" to avoid getting their contracts canceled. Includes strategies like "own the narrative" by talking to mayor "before public comment periods"

Websites should never send a "magic link" or code to login without first giving you the option to login with a password. Sending crap like that without giving you the option to enter your password is obnoxious. It's even worse when it's a text message code. #PetPeeve#BadUX#BrokenAsDesigned#AirBNB

The richest person in the world, an avowed white supremacist, today again posted "the next step is getting rid of 'source code' entirely and just making an efficient binary directly with AI" because he has no idea how anything works, not even the basics of industries he is in.
Absolutely unbelievable how solar power has taken off worldwide during the Hormuz oil crisis.
You don't have to hand it to him, but Trump may have done more to finally kick off a global civilization of effete librul solar users than anyone else in the West
“Trump has rejected disaster aid for Democratic-run states at the highest rate in the 47-year history of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.”

Dealing with difficult people may be hazardous to your health.
Each additional "hassler" in your network predicts 1.5% faster biological aging—and poorer physical and mental well-being over time. Non-spouse family hasslers are the most problematic.
Some ties aren't worth the toll they take.
One of the most depressing things about this past decade, and the competition is stiff, is how drastically it has lowered my estimation of my fellow citizens.
Trump is every reactionary psychopathology laid bare. I once thought, back in the mists of 2015, that people would see this--see the reactionary psyche for what it is--& be repulsed. But lots of people see it & experience it as validation, as authenticity or honesty. "I share that psychopathology!"
So, what happens if I'm a parent and I know that my kid needs highly paid teachers, a library full of books with diverse characters, trans-inclusive bathrooms and extracurriculars, and a curriculum unpacking topics like systemic racism, colonial oppression, economic inequality, and climate change?
