This interview with former mayor Larry O’Brien is WILD. He admits that being mayor is not a starter job and that promising zero or ultra-low tax increases is basically impossible to achieve. Hindsight and accountability: I like it. Will voters take this to heart? www.ctvnews.ca/ottawa/video...

Three pedestrians killed on Ottawa’s roads in October. We owe them more than condolences. Join us for the World Day of Remembrance: 🗓️ 15 Nov | 10:30 a.m. 📍Ottawa City Hall We call on Ottawa's new Council to show up, listen, and refuse to accept traffic deaths as inevitable. #otttraffic #ottwalk

Is there anything more Ottawa than seeing a (fantastic!) play starring the head of the competition bureau? Rogers v. Rogers opens tomorrow at the GCTC and it's very very good. It's a one-man show and quite the acting feat as he moves between dozens of characters.

That's it - kids should announce all policies from now on: It's adorable; It means it has to be easy to understand; And it would be appalling to have kids announce something like building a new fossil fuel pipeline that will make their future unlivable.

The rumors are true. Coming soon to a neighborhood near you...12,000 2-K seats!

6C and a light drizzle and we still had 8 kids riding the bike bus today! I asked my kid if he wanted to leave early to start at the first stop (an extra 2km round trip) and he said "it would be my honour to join you. You are the person who brought the bike bus to our school" 💓

The brisk air this morning had winter cycling on the mind! We heard a lot of interest at the @bikeottawa.bsky.social coffee chat this morning. People see good infrastructure, good maintenance, and people like them using it - why not give it a try too!

Oh The Urbanity!@ohtheurbanity.bsky.social

Winter cyclists in Quebec City have increased from 6,000 to 19,000 in just five years, as the city builds more bike infrastructure and takes winter clearing more seriously. Winter cycling doesn’t have to be as common as summer cycling to reach a point where it’s relatively common and visible.

The city isn't replanting when trees are lost and they aren't enforcing when the yard is paved over. They're actually now ENCOURAGING people to rent out parking spaces to commuters, something that was previously illegal, further incentivizing people to do this. Why is nobody taking this seriously?

Is it still a bike bus when it's only two people? I think so, especially if both of those people are bike bus leaders! What a delight to bike around Stanley Park with Maya Goldstein this morning. Maya and I both started bike buses in spring 2023 - her in Vancouver and me in Ottawa.

So far my #WeekWithoutDriving has been my usual mix of walking and biking (made possible by being able to live in a supportive neighbourhood). Today I am driving. Here's why and how this experience still contributes to my thinking about nondrivers:

1. My kid really wanted to go to a trampoline park that is in a very industrial suburban location for his birthday. There's nothing comparable that was easy to transit or bike to and there could be. Making kid-centred activities car dependent is a choice.

The first sign that my kid might become an urban planner was his Lego city. The second is that in today's PD Day pretend school he started a class called "city plan out". Sister and cat are the students.

Put another way, Ford wants to spend more on removing bike lanes in Toronto ($48M) than he's spent protecting all of Ontario's businesses from an international trade war. Ontario deserves serious leadership, that follows through on promises, and actually puts people before profits.
