Federal funding for science ensures that scientific agendas respond to the wants and needs of scientists and the public.
We do not want to live in a society where the scientific agenda is set by a handful of billionaires.
It’s time to have a serious conversation about this shift in philanthropic dollars to fund science, in the broader context of the Trump administration’s war on science as a public good.
Thank you to @heidiledford.bsky.social for covering this.

Their politics are all different, but the appeal of Mamdani, Ossoff, and El-Sayed as speakers and campaigners is that they don't seem afraid they're going to get in trouble. That makes them hard to bully or even make fun of successfully.
SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.
❗❗❗Mark Zuckerberg's meta just suspended the No Kings Instagram account. I just rushed back from my local No Kings to jump on this.
Bottom line, would be helpful for all pro-No Kings folks to elevate the issue and help us get the word out about No Kings today. The Nerd Reich strikes again.

The power of funding fundamental discovery in driving unexpected benefits for humankind are unmatched. We should be funding more basic research not less
UCSF’s Kevan Shokat, PhD, just won the $1M Stephenson Global Prize for research in pancreatic cancer. He cracked KRAS, a cancer driver long considered “undruggable.” Drugs built on his work now treat lung and pancreatic cancer. https://ow.ly/UYuY50ZRSXg

What. A. Day.
NIH grant-making was paused for several hours today. Not sure who gave the order. But in light of the Friday night Bhattacharya-Vought feud & threatened EO to implement #ScienceDeathPanels, my money is on Russell Vought.
I learned of the pause from a colleague around 11:30. 🧵

Russell Vought wants to be in charge of #ScienceDeathPanels at NIH.
Congress has made it pretty clear they don’t want political appointees in charge of funding decisions.

Your life saving clinical trail could be TERMINATED by the Trump administration.
We scraped through the data and found that 50% of all clinical trials are at risk of being cancelled. It's time to talk about it and what you can do to stop this. 🧵 🧪
At the start of the Trump administration, an executive order was released with certain words and phrases that will now be flagged by federal agencies.
Including "climate", which affects a large range of research topics from extreme weather to workplace environment & employee moral 🧪 🧵

Science Agencies Pull ‘Political Interference’ Protections From Scientific Integrity Policies
www.aip.org/fyi/science-...
NSF and the Department of Commerce have scrubbed references to the dangers of political interference in science from official agency policy documents.
„All of this is why we believe that end times fascism … should be seen as a twisted and sadistic form of climate-change adaptation. Now that the reality of planetary heating has become undeniable, all that is left to deny is the humanity of our fellow humans.“
