Day 19 #spacetober_challenge prompt is Saturn so I am sharing Russian #mathematician & writer Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevski (1850-1891) who worked, amongst other things on the dynamics of Saturn’s rings. 🪐 🧪🔭👩🏼🔬🧮 #histsci Her contributions to analysis, differential equations & mechanics include the
A limited number of crab and frog facts advent calendars are now available at SquidFacts.net!
These need to be made by hand, so we’ve been phasing them out but I was very lucky to have some help this week making some more in the lead up to December.
Get ‘em while they’re here!

A little landscape perfect for the current season, and for what today's weather has been like here, sunny, crisp and cold.
You will find this artwork in my Folksy shop...

4 years of #invertober#SciArt goobers
you know what, from going through 3-4 months of one of my worst art blocks ever to an outpouring of art 2025 was overall a good art year

I've been messing around with traditional art livestreams recently and trying to do a painting each stream. This was yesterday's! Traditional art is kicking my butt

I finished the 2026 #Nudivember prompt list and I'm posting it a bit early in case anyone wants to research any of the species ahead of time. I'll post it again closer to November.
Today's theme of the day on Folksy is 'Spotting Hedgehogs' have you seen any in your area?
This little guy is easy to spot in my shop...

Okay do you think I can catch up? I'm doing two different prompt lists at the same time too.
#SpacetoberChallenge Day 11: Crew or Cargo Spacecraft
I chose to go with a crew spacecraft and illustrated the Apollo Command Module.

Was slurping noods at lunch when I heard TV news mention parrotfish. Apparently confusion over whether they're being overfished off Penghu 澎湖. Probably? They do appear in seafood stalls in Taiwan, often generically labeled as 青衣、紅衣、鸚哥 etc. So here' a generic Scarinae for #SundayFishSketch 🐡🦑🧪
For this #sundayfishsketch I present a couple young brown trout (Salmo trutta) hanging out by the rocks and vegetation in this underwater scene. #fish#freshwater#trout#sciart
A Killdeer chick for meadowpaints on tumblr! Such a cute choice. Thank you for the #Waymakers donation and your support for immigrant kids!

Just now I learned there's a genus of "ribbongoby" thanks to photos posted by IG user @konatsu0898! Here's one Oxymetopon compressus for #SundayFishSketch 🦑🐡🧪
Got the nose-end totally wrong, but it’s a sketch.

In 2016, I used blue light for
my 'Cerebral Wilderness' neuron art installation as nod to optogenetics! ✨
Why blue light?
The foundational experiments by @deisseroth.bsky.social that launched the Nobel Prize winning technology of optogenetics in 2005 used blue light at ~ 470 nm
#sciart 🧪
One of today’s Nobel Prize winners, Karl Deisseroth, said he was inspired by Francis Crick’s original call for precision targeting of neurons in a Scientific American called "Thinking about the Brain" and kept a copy of the original 1979 issue on his desk. 🧪

Day 6 - #Ogre
Settled on the Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum). A venomous lizard of the southwest.
Armored, slow-moving, primarily subterranean, maybe a little brutish.
Thought it was a decent fit for today’s prompt.

Day 5 - #Smack
Green iguanas use their tails as a primary defense mechanism. Smacks from a large adult are poweful enough to leave welts, draw blood, and break small bones.

Day 5 of #spacetober_challenge by is space station, so I am sharing a tiny linocut print I made of the track of the ISS across the night sky.

The Waymakers challenge is a race and fundraiser hosted every September by @theyoungcenter.bsky.social to help immigrant kids in the US. Join us again next September!

Day 4 - #Cactus
A Porcupine Fish (Diodon hystrix) doing its best barrel cactus impression.
Looks like something socked them in the eye, causing the puff-up?

Science center @heureka.fi ’s new exhibition The Evolution of Dinosaurs is open!
I had the pleasure of being involved in several roles with the exhibition, including illustrating the info screens. Here’s the undisputed star of any dino media: T. rex. #SciArt
A throwback for Ctenophore Day! 🧪🐡🪼 If you ever wondered how to pronounce Ctenophore, today is October 4, the 10th month, fourth day and it sounds like ten oh four. They are a phylum of marine invertebrates, like this comb jelly which look a bit like jellyfish, but instead of stinging tentacles 🧵
