Super excited to see the second article from my dissertation published in @politicsgenderj.bsky.social Drawing on unique Norwegian data, I find the green gender gap already exists in early adolescence. Boys are less climate-concerned, less supportive of green policies and less likely to vote green.

Really cool to see the first piece of research outside of my PhD I was a research assistant and co-author on highlighted here (with @drorlysiow.bsky.social & @drashleec.bsky.social ). Findings: white male ministers engage least with equalities organisations, and minoritised women engage most.

theconversation.comCould women’s anger turn Makerfield voters against Reform UK?Reform’s candidate Robert Kenyon has been challenged over historic social media posts.

Will say that, anecdotally, it felt to me that Goodwin's history of misogynistic comments cut through in Gorton and Denton too. I remember hearing that there was a surprising amount of anti Goodwin content coming from usually non political personal Instagram accounts of young women.

Note: I do also think these issues can be important to, and move, men’s vote choices too. But for women it’s a direct threat to their safety/security; for men it’s not. we can see this both in, I think, gender gaps in attitude preference but also perhaps prioritisation.

The fake plumber openly boasting about being sexist while his party was promising a nightmarishly misogynistic rollback on women's rights feels like an important part of the Makerfield result no one will talk about

Some vg on the ground reporting of Makerfield, which tended to find Burnham outpolling Labour significantly, and especially with women (as polls, before inaccurate reweighted, showed). Overall, national media had skewed perceptions/expectations. Not realising X is a distorting mirror key to that

Makerfield really looks like a story of the left (Greens, Lib Dems) consolidating behind Labour/Burnham. If he does become PM, the challenge is whether he can do that sufficiently in seats where Reform are less of a threat, and where he isn’t the candidate.

At the General Election the Greens got 1776 votes and the Lib Dems got 2735 votes in the constituency. Yesterday at the by-election they got 308 and 163 respectively.

Then @cerifowler.bsky.social is presenting our ongoing work on how survey non-response varies by what is being asked about, how we ask it, and who answers We find that who says DK, and to what/when, is very much non-random, which matters given we all tend to just drop the DKs from our analyses

Three (gendered!) things I think are important to understanding Labour support. 1) Their "core voter" for the last few elections is female, young, has a degree 2) Especially in seats where the Greens/other left options are viable, this vote is splitting, with the youngest women going Green...

A bit on the gender divide in the Makerfield by election And confirmation the GM by election would take place on July 30 (ie very quickly) as.ft.com/r/d1d7ea16-9...

...but Labour hold onto a high proportion of women in their 30s and 40s 3) Lots of these voters are strategic - they will vote for the best option to keep Reform out. This is probably especially true in Makerfield, where the controversy around the candidate is about sexism/misogyny.

Some v. interesting patterns in our pre-2026 locals data e.g., the share of younger women saying they would vote Green appears considerably higher than the share reporting a Green vote in 2024. Lots more to dig into, but it's one of several changing dynamics on the left that we explore here 👇

Key point! Senedd elections under the new system did not give a more proportional result.

James David Griffiths@jamesdgriffiths.bsky.social

When electoral reform was introduced, the Welsh Govt said that they wanted to change to a "proportional" system. But if we look at the Gallagher index (higher = disproportional), we can see this system wasn't really an improvement on any past Senedd election. Its better than FPTP, but what isnt!
