A few comments on Israel's exit polls. 1. The current government has been defeated, falling from 68 seats to 50. They lost about a quarter of their seats. They have no route to form a similar government. 2. The anti-Netanyahu opposition has 70 seats out of 120 - its highest ever result.

Different countries, different elections. But a year that has seen Orbán, Bolsonaro and Vučić defeated (and the GOP likely routed at the midterms next week) doesn't exactly fit the narrative of a relentless rightwards shift. Good candidates, campaigns, movements can still win.

The most obvious point of difference is of course Wilson’s investment in a university. Unheard of nowadays

The list sent by Harold Wilson to his cabinet of “little things that mean a lot”, including the protection of local breweries, concessionary fares for the elderly, empty office blocks and “the future of the pint”. Echoes of this in Burnham’s small but popular policies today.

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

No public provision should ever be for profit. It always always always ends in disaster. From healthcare to education to water to transport. It’s time to check your ideology against reality folks. Lived through communism so I know what I’m talking about. Doesn’t work however nice it sounds Move on

If there are only "pockets of poor provision" why doesn't OfS just focus on the pockets? One in 10 students are now taught by a for-profit franchise; students taught on these programmes have worse outcomes than students on the universities validating the franchise degrees. Focus on franchising.
