Glad to make this my 1st article in BlueSky🚨Jan 6th Insurrection is a watershed of democratic backsliding not simply in US but also worldwide. Yet, we know little how this autocratization event affects other countries. In this paper, I find it reduces citizens’ expressed support for far-right (FR)

Takeaway findings: respondents strongly preferred candidates advocating hawkish economic and geopolitical policies against China. These foreign-policy positions were consistently prioritized over salient domestic issues

It is well known that citizens in autocracies often emigrate (exit) in response to repression. Yet, despite their growing access to voting rights, we know little about whether they voice homeland-related concerns in elections after they settle in democratic countries🧐

This paper argues that prior experience of autocracy shapes diasporas’ voting preference, inclining them toward hawkish foreign-policy position🦅against their homeland’s authoritarian regime. To test this idea, we fielded a candidate choice expt among Hong Kong diasporas in 4 liberal democracies 🇦🇺🇨🇦🇬🇧🇺🇸

What about the change in economic attitudes and democratic attitudes? Citizens in 🇪🇸 and 🇬🇹 become more pro-state intervention and more supportive of democracy after this far-left populist's victory. In the paper, there are more discussions about the effects’ heterogeneity and mechanisms

The answer is not obvious for two reasons: 1) thick ideologies of far-left & far-right differ; 2) far-left populists often win in developing countries➡️exposure to their victories is uncertain. I develop a framework to explain how their victories can shape economic and democratic attitudes abroad.

My research studies Chavez’s 1998 victory, which is regarded as the leftist resurgence beginning in Latin America. The receiver countries are 🇪🇸 and 🇬🇹, where the Latinobarómetro survey was fielded amid this election. As shown in the newspaper archive, the event was salient in these two countries

Overall, this article can bridge three strands of literature: (a) autocratization, (b) democratic attitudes, (c) transnational learning. Like my recent publications and other works in my pipeline, this paper’s focus lies in the intersection of the three circles.

Another is benchmark effect: expecting SWD 📈. The benchmark effect can link to works on economic voting, Brexit, pandemic One important resource that I use is De Vries’ book. The alternative state in the ref. country (autocratization) can serve as benchmark for citizens to evaluate their democracy

To test which expectation is correct, I re-use two European datasets collected amid Trump’s victory back in 2016. Findings? 🥁🥁🥁 Benchmark effect, though the magnitude is small I also explore various kinds of heterogeneity effects. The one that I focus on is motivated reasoning through ideology

There are two effects we can think of for this research puzzle. One is contagion/domino effect: expecting SWD 📉 The theoretical underpinning can date back to Huntington’s seminal work “The Third Wave”
