The panic over AI’s potential existential threats is obscuring a more immediate risk from the technology, @willgottsegen.com argues.

Replying to @socialmedialab.ca
This is a reminder that what can be discerned from publicly available social media data should never be compared to what is typically thought of as 'public opinion.' Our colleagues and we highlighted this problem back in 2018. policyoptions.irpp.org/2018/09/when...

I wanted to say a bit more about this one. I hear two metaphors about the opposing view to college is workforce training. One is it's about the train your brain work (learning is like the gym, you get better by doing it), and the other is becoming a lifelong learner bc it's fun/ rewarding.
3. That college is about reading for “the workforce.” No, it’s about development for the adult force. Of which work is a part. 4/

I will though. I’m planning a heist. My plan: get a library card, check out the book, read it, take careful notes, return the book on time, and KEEP THE KNOWLEDGE FOREVER FOR FREE HAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA #EvilVillainLaugh
You know what gets a library perpetual access to a book??? Purchasing the physical book. I guarantee the publisher won’t come steal it back!!!

Looks like I’ll be the director of an academic conference as part of University of Colorado’s new partnership with the Sundance Film Festival, coming to Boulder in January. It’ll be baby steps this year, but there will be a lot to plan for January 2028.

Music publishers have argued that, if left unchecked, Anthropic’s reliance on pirated and unauthorized works to train AI will make it harder to make a living as a songwriter today, while diluting the market with low-quality copies of recognizable songs.

Sony Music and Warner Chappell Music have sued Anthropic, for what the suit characterizes as illegally downloading, scraping and torrenting “thousands upon thousands” of copyrighted songs to train its AI models. https://bit.ly/4i71jfh

From free-to-play games and smart cities to the apps we use to buy our morning coffee, Florence invites us to look beyond what technologies can do and ask what they should do. youtu.be/wQYPZ2tzv2o
The conversation explores why ethics needs to be built into technological development from the beginning, and why particularly marginalised and vulnerable communities need a meaningful role in shaping the technologies that affect their lives. youtu.be/wQYPZ2tzv2o

a terrific example of why regulation IS important if, for some reason, the poo poo salad stuff hasn’t convinced folks! companies are not incentivized to do good, they are regulated to do good.
Scoop: Logitech will sell two different versions of its products: user-replacable batteries for Europe, fixed batteries in the US and elsewhere. Just like Nintendo with the Switch 2. www.theverge.com/tech/971963/...
