Prediction markets are not predictive and should not be covered as news

The problem is that prediction market companies like Kalshi have made exclusive deals with media companies and news organizations. It's why when you see them going over polls on CNN they'll mention what prediction markets are saying.

Odds are what bettors think will happen, not what experts discern through research and knowledge. If there really were experts, they would make money and retire at a young age.

Prediction markets are political casinos where people bet against America, and not only should they not be covered in the news, but they should also be illegal. It's "Twitter"⸺Oh, I'm sorry. "X"⸺for the bored, gambling addicted Investor class.

Don't expect "prediction" markets like Kalshi to predict anything accurately. They don't reflect reality; they simply reflect the opinions of those who are using the site to gamble.

I have no problem with sports gambling other than right now it's too invasive in everything. It's betting on game outcomes. But prediction markets (which is gambling no matter what loophole they use to get away with not being regulated as such) that take bets on non fun and games should be illegal.

Before the advent of prediction markets, way back in 2016, a great many number of pollsters had Clinton handily beating Trump, and "the science" did about as well as the prediction market. Turns out, we are all just guessing.

Well, Im in WI and was backing Hong. Then Crowley dropped out very late in the game. I voted early & by then he was back in. It made it difficult. Plus he did a lot of good for Milwaukee & thats our biggest city, so its no surprise he had a lot of support. And now Hong is going to campaign with him!

Im guessing you r under 40? Under 40 is young for making a name for yourself in Politics. She has been a rep for WI for several years, is really dedicated to her constituents & a really hard worker. She is very deserving of recognition at such a young age.

it's no different than when republicans say something like, 'polls say 70% of America think democrats suck.' no sh*t..you spent the last 5 years hammering the false narrative that democrats suck. this is happening with prediction markets.

Has anyone actually done an academic study on the accuracy of these predictions? There are many legitimate reasons to oppose Kalshi & Polymarket, but I always assumed they’ve been more accurate than polling for predicting elections.

Clearly a case of too much focus on Hong by Fox News. They obsessed over her because she made the perfect foil and their audience bought in.

Polls and prediction markets mostly serve as a warning to the Establishment that they need to put last-minute resources into a race or else people might get healthcare.

the many (too many) ways that gambling is tolerated in the human psyche in moderns times is such a fuqqin dog whistle that the corpo-crypt-rats are preparing all us "little people" for the future of a Hunger Games style existence.

I wish we had real evidence, and if so I wish it would come out right now, when something could actually be done about it, not written in some history book. Otherwise, we sound no better than all the GOP MAGATs morons crying 'there are anomalies!' like the Pillow guy is doing RIGHT NOW.

We need a forensic investigation. If it proves the elections were clean and free from digital manipulation, great—we can move on with confidence. The women Trump purportedly beat, did not investigate the election upsets, due to their (Democrats) “peaceful transfer” values.

At best they represent a tool to incentivize specific criminal activities with vast sums to be made only by the person who controls the outcome entirely. This is not Gambling because there is no chance only crime and money.

The polls are misleading and shouldn’t be allowed. I woke up expecting Hong won and was shocked to see she didn’t. Crowley had 16% in the polls and won! Either way he’ll get my vote in November.

That's a tweet from kalshi. Use a picture of the news showing people that, I'm sure they are. But that's not what this picture is.

They are not predicative, they are manipulative to those who rely on them to decide their politics. Vote with your heart, and vote for the candidate who aligns with your morals. Don’t rely on populist candidates propped up by the same mechanisms actively oppressing us.

I always think back to HS, where our Valentine’s fundraiser was a matchmaking questionnaire. They were equally as accurate.

I wonder if the polling was so off because they were taking the betting odds into account lol Still tho, for a self described socialist to get so close to a governorship means that we're making real headway.

It's gambling. It should be treated as gambling. It should also be treated as insider trading with high exposure to market manipulation. It needs to be heavily regulated or outright banned.

Just as sports betting odds are not predictors of sports outcomes in any way and should never be covered as such (ESPN). Sports betting odds are the same as prediction market odds... they are adjusted based on how money is being wagered and their purpose is to maximize the gambling house's profits.

Yup, these prediction markets are merely bookies for election outcomes - although, from what I understand, you can apparently bet on just about anything on those platforms. I have no firsthand knowledge as I generally avoid businesses who's model is determined to separate me and my $.

Normal people do not gamble because they realize that just handing cash to someone in exchange for nothing is not a worthwhile endeavor. Only people with gambling addictions gamble. These sites prey on people with mental illnesses.

Gambling houses exist only because they can consistently and predictably turn a profit. And when you think about it, there is only one way they could do that. A similar thing applies to insurance companies.

They turn a profit by building in a margin. For example, if an outcome was 50/50. They wouldn't offer 2:1 and pay $2 for every $1. Their odds would be $1.90/$1.95 or something similar. Just like how a casino takes a rake. This isn't a secret or some underhanded trick.

The thing about sports books is that they are able to essentially move the goalposts. When the money leans too far one way in a contest, they just move the line. Funny enough though, the Knicks cost sports books just shy of $50 million because so many people laid wagers. I love when the House loses

Anyone or anything that bets against Black people when it comes to voting is totally out of touch. Black people are the most loyal demographic with 90% turnout when it comes to voting.🙏🏽🗳️

Elections will Always have Good&BAD Consequences that will effect Everyone. The pending midterm elections could have good consequences. Vote like your Democracy and lives depend on it.

There’s mathematical probability, there’s mathematical certainty, and then there is historical fact. What comes to pass is superior to certainty, and certainty is superior to probability.

I have heard 2 contradictory things, that the polls and predictions kept down Haley supporters but they said the same about Hong. I suspect it was neither. Stevens nearly won because undecideds broke for her and Crowley won for same reason and both based on the electibility issue.

That's one theory. I would be reluctant to read too much shared subtext into Wisconsin and Michigan results. They are different states with different candidates. Hong is significantly left of El Sayed, and Crowley is significantly left of Stevens, so treating them as analogs strikes me as flawed.

i am talking about the polling being so far off. Hong and El Sayed got near polling RCP Average 7/8-7/29 El Sayed 50.5 Stevens 40.3 final 48.5 47.5 El-Sayed +1.0 Hong was around 40%, Crowley vastly below. in both cases either undecideds went entirely to Crowley/Stevens or some soft support fell

While I do agree with this and we need regulation for these sites, they can be indicators of what the user base there is thinking. I do not use them so I am not plugging them. Also, MSNOW, FoxNews, CNN, etc are not news either. Journalism is pointing a mic/camera at events and showing others what...

is happening in the area/region/state/nation/world. Newspapers, TV, even Internet based content do not qualify as news. They are news entertainment, very different. We must have a larger conversation about how citizenry can be kept up to date and informed. Currently it is grotesque & damaging.

We have created an economy where working a full time job doesn't even get you the bare minimum to live a fulfilling life anymore but betting on stocks and markets does if you are lucky enough to have the capital and win. Actually depressing
