Farming funding can't be allocated in the same way as Oasis tickets. I was glad to speak up for farmers in the @libdems.org.uk debate on the Sustainable Farming Incentive. Whitehall doesn't know how rural North Norfolk works. That's why I've got to keep fighting for it.

Shocking service from the RAC.

Helen Barnard@helenbarnard.bsky.social

Shocking from the RAC this weekend: Arrived at station c 20.00, mum's car wouldn't start. Requested a rescue, noted she's 84. Told rescue would come by *11.30* Called after 2 hours (no uodates), no info on estimated arrival time but still up to 11.30...

A Haitian man legally immigrated to Ohio, then was given an ankle monitor bc Trump withdrew his status. He threw himself in front of truck. The trucker, who voted for Trump, is haunted. “Pierre was doing what he was supposed to do. We did not do right by him.” www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...

Tonight I made meatballs with gnocchi. If I say so myself, it was the best Bolognese sauce I ever made. Not sure what was different but wow! Let's hope I can repeat it.

I’m just a person on my fucking knees begging the government to use its absolutely massive majority to do something extremely fucking popular: save our democracy.

The French made a short film about what could happen after all immigrants would follow the ‘white, angry old man’s’ advice to go back where they came from.

Brexit is the saddest thing that has happened during my life.

Sarah Murphy@13sarahmurphy.bsky.social

“When the Brexit referendum happened, I didn’t believe any UK government would seek the deal we ended up with; I couldn’t imagine a govt would inflict this on its own nation” … or, worse, that they’d keep on inflicting it. FFS, just stop this Brexit madness. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

My writing on trade appears leaden and bland by comparison with this, about an entertaining as you can ever make my subject

This explainer out of Australia is genuinely useful background and analysis of what happened with the Canada-US trade deal last night. Note that it is extremely and delightfully sweary. Also there’s an appended glossary of Australian slang. ifloz.substack.com/p/king-carne...

Such a weird sky right now. Yellow to the north, cumulus clouds above, the biggest I have seen. Wind, rain and thunder. The hot dry summer is ending with a bang for sure.

Most of England and Wales are now in drought, with wildfires burning across the country and record-breaking heatwaves straining water supplies. Beatrice Mosello from Chatham House's Environment and Society Centre argues that the extreme summer temperatures expose a serious policy gap.

I believe Clacton deserves an MP who will spend their time shining a light on everything the area has to offer. And why wait till I'm elected? I've been to visit one of the constituency's most stunning landmarks.

Experts say Russia's efforts aren't necessarily about making Brits pro-Russian, but "making the UK feel dysfunctional, hypocritical, exhausted, divided": "For Russia, it suffices to identify divisive issues to pour gasoline on, intensify them, and benefit from the resulting chaos"

Thomas Paine is my favorite founding father. He was famously abolitionist and one of the earliest voices to point out the hypocrisy of fighting for independence while keeping slaves. He also firmly believed that keeping any friendship which required compromising your morals made you a bad person.

The Rude Pundit@rudepundit.bsky.social

The founder we should talk more about is Thomas Paine, who will fuck your shit up every time. Here he is in The Rights of Man just ripping into any ideas of "originalism" and that kind of garbage.

Friday Murder time and this one is upsetting. So I'm going to focus less on the details and more on the reaction of the police and their investigation. On 19th May 1891, some sailors noticed a bag in Sandon Basin, a dock in the north part of Liverpool. They took it out of the water and opened it.

Crazy idea. Be gentle when explaining why it won't work. Government sets aside £10,000 when someone turns 18, invested in an ETF. 50 years later, at retirement age, that £10K is worth £460,000 at a long term average 8% return per year. Buys an annuity instead of state pension.

Ten years ago today the whole country and its future were sacrificed on the altar of Boris Johnson’s ego, David Cameron’s stupidity and Nigel Farage’s prejudice. A decade thrown away and a nation left angrier and poorer. Thanks, you absoute pricks.

In 1909, Peterborough's workhouse was extensively investigated for a scandal. What kind of scandal? No idea yet, only found out about it last night... So, in about an hour, I'm going to read the newspaper reports and TELL YOU ALL ABOUT IT, like it's twitter in 2020.

It's a fascinating, funny and horrifying read all at the same time. I strongly recommend it.

Gillian Brockell@gillianbrockell.com

Meta also prevented her from going on a book tour for her own book last year, which might be why you haven’t heard of it. “Careless People” is beyond shocking. You really should read it immediately, so you’ll understand that Zuck is THE WORST of the nerd reich.
