It always comes back to this for me; if AI was so good, such a disclosure would be a selling point. If AI was everything these slop jockeys said it was, they should be proud to let people know their game was AI made. But the proof is in the pudding, and they can't stand that people don't want it.

Another very based tweet by the Japanese PM. Cuts through the bureaucracy sysadmins have to deal with by telling them, "Client not answering the phone? Middle-management still dithering? Fuck 'em, just shut the website down, if they complain you can tell them I told you to do it"

An #ElixirLang package to check your `@spec` annotations against the types the compiler infers. Definitely the sort of thing with a limited shelf life (assuming we eventually get the ability to write our own compiler-checked types), but in the meantime, seems super valuable. hex.pm/packages/spe...

My hypothesis is that people are generally more predictable than they themselves would like to be, but less predictable than businesses would like them to be, and a lot of modern business is about building guiderails to increase that predictability ("personalisation" a big part of this)

Hacking a voting machine (as suggested in the teaser) isn't the problem. That's how you find and fix weaknesses. The problem is that they were told not to tell the vendor (or anyone else) what they found, so the result could be kept on the shelf and used to cast doubt on election outcomes. Yikes.

TIL about Enum.count_until/2: # Bad, potentially traverses millions of elements if length(my_list) > 1, do: ... if Enum.count(my_list) > 1, do: ... # Good: traverses at most 2 elements if Enum.count_until(my_list, 2) > 1, do: ... #ElixirLang

AI content in a technology blog post breaks a very core contract of what's going on when you seek out a blog or article on some question you have. the problem is: I already have access to an LLM. If I wanted to know what an LLM thought about a question, I would just ask it.

You can do things. You actually can. And you don't have to do it alone - there are almost certainly folks near you who are doing things about the problems that trouble you. Find 'em! Do something!

ultimately if your reaction to someone saying "I think this is bad, I am ethically unhappy about it, I don't want to touch it" is to go "well it's useful so. it's everywhere. nothing to be done" I just kind of think you're an asshole

But that's the thing: I don't believe that these people actually care about the ethics of AI personhood. It is because they know the robots aren't people that they feel safe wringing their hands over their personhood. Real people? Eh. They require stuff from you

the reason β€œAI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

This (thread) was an instructive example as to who is served by minimizing the errors of AI transcription, where the specific bias is to conceal slavery.

Caitlin G. DeAngelis@caitlindeangelis.bsky.social

Recently, FamilySearch digitized and uploaded tons of microfilmed records, including many from 18th-century Massachsuetts. They're using some sort of AI to transcribe/summarize the handwritten documents. I've noticed that the AI strips out references to race and enslavement in 18thc documents.

What I suppose I find interesting about AI conciousness is that the idea's boosters are never, so far as I can tell, asked the question "why are you trying to make a slave"

Question! Does anyone know where I can find interviews or primary source documents with coal miners or oil patch workers (workers, specifically, not owners!) talking about how they think about climate change, and how it relates to their jobs? Denialism is fine: I'm trying to look at the rhetoric.

The pineal gland or parietal eye that regulates time related processes used to be on the outside of our head, sensing light, before evolving to sink back into our skulls where it's surrounded by darkness. It can still sense light, though. It just never gets the chance

Do you know of any large open-source elixir codebase? I'm talking in the ballpark of 200k, 300k LOC or more. I often need to test the performance of a change but I don't have a large enough codebase for the measurements to be representative of our user base.
