Amazing and important work!

As a PhD student designing my first survey, I added what I thought was a throwaway question at the end. To my surprise, thousands of academics answered it! The paper is out today: doi.org/10.1093/pnas...

As of today, the CDC has changed (reverted) their Covid guidance to make the vaccine recommended for all people over 18. In addition to being a smart public health move, this recommendation also means insurance must cover it. Read more here: www.cdc.gov/covid/hcp/va... Listen to a breakdown here:

I'd support making all grades pass/fail. Not just for mental health reasons. But because allocating opportunities based on grades incentivizes students to try to game the system, either by begging professors for extra credit or by using tools like AI to cheat. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

The most terrifying enshittification I've discovered has been learning that Microsoft Word documents no longer auto-save if you are not saving them to one of their own proprietary cloud services. I'm slapping control-S like it's 1999.

The Merlin Bird ID app will soon allow users to contribute data to monitor bird populations and aid conservation efforts. The project at Cornell University that produced the Merlin Bird ID app was funded by NSF’s Directorate for STEM Education (EDU), which was gutted by the Trump regime. 🪶

There's a record-breaking, dangerous heat wave hitting Europe. Lots of news outlets are covering it. But alongside reporting about heat records, warnings, and even deaths, there are, sometimes, photos of crowded beaches or people lounging in parks www.fastcompany.com/91563140/sto...

“Right now, in some underfunded lab, a scientist is chasing a question that sounds pointless…No one can say if they will succeed. But a century of experience says that funding people to do this work is a good bet. If we stop making that bet, we will pay for it in cures no one will know to miss.”

An individual's growth mindset, on its own, may only predict so much. I'm more interested in "seed & soil" approaches to mindsets, and peers certainly make up part of the "soil." Large, international sample suggests individual and peers' mindset, and their interaction, predict academic resilience.

Science is a story – join the communities that tell it. Every experiment has a backstory. Every figure, failure and breakthrough is shaped by people, choices and chance. If narratology is about how stories are told and why they matter, then science is rich with narratives waiting to be uncovered.
