Student had their GRFP returned without review. I'm closely following the existing conversations on this, but one of my qualms is that he's eligible for another year, but won't get any feedback. Anyone interested in banning together to provide reviews to students who are hoping to apply again?

Thoroughly enjoyed the horrified looks on my students' faces this afternoon upon hearing that I initially learned to code in Base R with no RStudio or ggplot because neither was around at the time 😂 it perhaps had never occurred to them that such a world ever existed 🤓👵

Reminder about the open postdoc position in my lab! Will start reviewing applicants on Monday!

Pleased to announce my lab will soon be hiring a postdoc! Join an interdisciplinary group working on ecosystem change following the last glacial maximum in southeast Alaska. Substantial modeling skills are a big plus! Applications due April 20th. coreykrabbenhoft.com/join-us-2/

Unfortunate turn of events in the lab led to opportunity for some great photos. These are fatmucket glochidia (native mussel larvae) infested in the gills of a largemouth bass. The rest of their friends are alive and well. Hopefully we'll have a nice crop of juvenile mussels soon!

I'm bringing a group of undergrad hydrologists to AGU and it would be great for them to do some networking. If you are also bringing hydrology students who might like to meet up with my group, please let me know and I'll put them in touch!

Need help IDing this critter. Sample is from our tanks holding unionid mussels that were collected in a local creek (western New York state). Photo is through an inverted compound scope. Reminiscent of copepods, but way too small and lacking the swimming legs, etc.

Wading into the bsky world with an update on my lab. My university's comms team did a nice write-up on our new project on native mussels. We're propagating unionids as the first baby step toward a reintroduction program in the Niagara River watershed. Really fun departure from my usual fishy focus!

buffalo.eduCan freshwater mussels clean the Niagara River?UB scientists are investigating if the water and sediment quality of the upper river can support these organisms that naturally filter out contaminants.

You are up to date.
