JFC--they are telling us to turn over one of our most important tasks as researchers to AI. This is appalling. I also imagine someone is making money here......

How can AI support researchers in peer review? Springer Nature and Google DeepMind are partnering to co-design an AI peer review assistant that helps reviewers navigate manuscripts and focus on where their scientific judgement matters most. Learn more: spklr.io/63320EVgT8

I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.

Eric Lipton. below, has led an effort over the past two years to document the destruction of environmental protections under Trump II. It has gone for the most part unnoticed compared to, well, many other things, probably because it’s happening far from the Oval Office. But it’s very important.

Everyone should read these threads I did about industry lobbyists and the EPA and understand them. Take the time to see the unambiguous evidence of what's happening now at this moment inside the EPA. Please retweet them. Please read them. Each one of the threads. It's happening in slow motion.

Happy to share this new paper in JGR-B! We showed how mapping wetlands and using probabilistic maps improved soil carbon mapping. It's a great step towards better representation of wetland soil carbon hotspots within the landscape.

A new meta-analysis of 66 stream studies reveals that biological structure and ecosystem functioning respond differently to #restoration. One key insight is that without proper reference states, we can't tell if interventions are hitting true process-based targets for stream ecosystem functions.

In my most curmudgeonly moments, I don’t see why presenting the prose output of a machine built on mass theft as your own scholarly work should be evaluated less harshly than old school plagiarism. Traditional plagiarists at least had to identify and evaluate the works they were going to copy.

Opinion: If AI is now part of academic writing, what should institutions actually evaluate? This essay argues that analytical writing should be judged by evidence, structure, argument, and accountability not by guesses about how each sentence was produced. https://chroni.cl/4eDRdjg

When ice sheets melt, unique freshwater habitats vanish. With all 17 epishelf lakes along Canada’s Ellesmere Island now gone, scientists warn that rapid Arctic warming is dismantling the planet's fridge and threatening the Arctic's most climate-resilient ice ecosystems. Ruth Kamnitzer reports.

mongabay.ccLoss of a rare lake reveals how warming has hit the Canadian Arctic’s ‘planetary fridge’When an ice shelf blocks a polar fjord, it sparks the creation of an ecosystem like no other: the epishelf lake. Good thread. The hep B Vax study in Guinea-Bissau exploits people in poverty, lacks equipoise, wastes resources that could go toward meeting needs to address an already answered question, and dooms babies to incredibly high risk of life-long suffering.

I’ve seen a few folks comment that “Guinea-Bissau is a low income country and cannot afford the hep B vaccine birth dose, so why is this study unethical?” It’s a good question. Let me have a go at answering it. In a nutshell, researchers cannot ethically exploit poverty & scarcity to do a trial
