Excited to share that our Women of the Borderlands archive is now available. It's the 1st to preserve the voices of women and the gendered complexities of life in and around the UK/Irish borderlands. We are so grateful to our research participants and the IQDA for making this happen.
Hard not to think at least some of the bureaucratic cruelty surrounding these cases, which the courts have exposed and condemned, is part of Jim O'Callaghan's hardman act to solidify his profile as a future leader of Fianna Fáil. This should be disqualifying. www.irishtimes.com/crime-law/co...
Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.
Blatant lies told without accountability is not just a US phenomenon. Big Jim is doing a pretty good job of emulating this here. It sits alongside the "I'm an important man, how dare you question me" attitude that prevails across government, HEIs, tech etc.
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."
'Now entering its 21st week and with no end in sight, the current strike involving University and College Union (UCU) staff is the longest in living memory in British higher education, originating from a staff marking boycott in April over proposed job cuts.'
And so it begins... House Dems release explosive 53-page congressional report alleging possible criminal conspiracy, evidence of DOJ cover-up, and call for Special Counsel to investigate the DOJ itself.

This man made Stomont an unsafe place for members of the public and charities to give evidence to committees on a range of matters from misogyny to racism. He has shut down Stormont to minotities - handpicked by Jim Allister - his past was well known. UDA have their friends in Stormont. [1/n]
People in Belgrade celebrated following Serbia's Aleksandar Vucic speech conceding defeat to a student-led protest movement in a historic election that ends his long grip on power and heralds a new political era in the Balkan country. reut.rs/4zkXvww
I am genuinely shocked he's still in the job today.
Going after the DRCC because they embarrassed him in the solicitors row is probably the most Trumpian thing any Irish politician has done.
Can confirm. I once stood arm in arm around a library entrance. The Gardaí refused to allow us (locals) into the library but instead, escorted far right agitators in to harass staff.
I met the local Gardaí a week later. They refused to let me even take notes at the discussion.
It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.
Bolsonaro had corrupt media on his side, Meta interference on his side, US propaganda operations, and his party's officials actively sabotaging public transport in Lula strongholds to prevent turnout.
Yet he was still beaten by the power of voter turnout.
The Taoiseach is now backing the Justice Minister's actions in intervening to silence a charity.
I'm not exaggerating.
The Justice minister boasted about his role in pulling the ad himself.
The government are intervening to silence messaging they don't like.
Fascism is at your doorstep #spéirgorm
“Palantir cofounder and CEO Alex Karp states ‘AI will undermine the influence of highly educated, often female voters and give it to working class men.
We have feminine energy running our cities and our courts,’ he complained.”
I'm sure Jason's family will be happy to learn that Nathan Cofnas is to speak at Oriel College, Oxford, on whether DEI is undermining higher education. As I've always said, academia is a cesspit with the immoral failing upward and the more ethical traumatised or worse.
The headline is kind of misleading. One of Jason's co-authored articles that had raised questions has had a correction added by the journal clarifying what the research is based on. If it was deemed to be plagiarism it would likely have been retracted instead. : www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?
From the govt's press release:
"The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost."
Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.
The Justice Minister interfering with the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre consent campaign "because it does not represent the views of the Government" is unsettling.
Interference like this risks creating a chilling effect and self-censorship within wider civil society.

This, from the hugely experienced Irish courts reporter, Isabel Hayes, on the Minister for Justice’s performative outrage over an ad about children and consent, is worth reading.

Gary Gannon says justice minister ordering removal of consent ad sets ‘dangerous precedent' jrnl.ie/7202000
I think both the Minister for Justice and the Minister for Health should learn that putting your hand on a political hot plate burns, for educational purposes.
What’s worse is the ad was based off research with real kids and young people.
But god forbid, a few imaginary grand parents have their feelings hurt.
So on form for the Irish state.
“Children should be seen and not heard.”
Shaymaa Abdualu has been offered a fully funded place on a four-year Engineering degree programme at UCC.
She cannot travel to Ireland to take her place because her application for a study visa was refused by the Dept of Justice.
It makes me deeply uncomfortable that the Minister for Justice has used his Twitter account to create an online pile on of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre. It also appears to me a dangerous precedent that this minister, and his dept. have instructed the DRCC to remove content that he disapproved of.
Given all of the issues of grave concern in the Justice Department, I find it incredible the pace to which the minister took to his Twitter account this morning, and the speed at which his officials were sent to moderate the content of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre.
People who have experience working in charities know that being reliant on state funding has a chilling effect on how we do our jobs.
The Minister for Justice intervened here to make a political point and undermined the work of those with the expertise to do the job. #spéirgorm
Adverts run by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre looking at consensual hugs between children and their grandparents has been suspended after criticism.
Aontú's Peader Tóibín called the ad "bonkers", as he urged a "need to build resilience" among children.

Jim O' Callaghan Mon: I'm the rape understander, rape is terrible and I'm gonna misrepresent the current situation by pointing my finger at solicitors who I've cut funding from.
Jim O' Callaghan Thurs: consent is just bunkum. The rape crisis Centre are terrible people.
The headline here is about Aontú and their typical imported Yank culture war shtick.
The *story* is an embattled Justice Minister silencing a charity that is working to protect children and adults from abuse.
He is behaving like a fascist on a near daily basis and could easily be our next leader.
