Absolutely incredible: Tuesday morning's high tide in #Miami exceeded the major flood threshold... that is the 1st time it has ever happened in the city's history without a hurricane storm surge. It tied (within 0.1 inches) the storm tides produced by Irene on Oct 15, 1999 and Wilma on Oct 24, 2005.

I teach a climate change course to ~150 students each year. Back in 2022, we did some simple extrapolation to see when we reach 1.5°C under recent trends/variability etc. Since then, every year we've been updating those old graphs to compare. A lot has changed in four years...

Together with other scientists I’m suing the 🇺🇸 US National Institutes of Health for violating our 1st Amendment rights & censoring our health science. I’m ready to shine a light on the darkest days. Buckle up, read on. This gets pretty wild… THREAD

ACLU@aclu.org

By terminating research grants like Kelton's to censor views it doesn’t like, the NIH is blocking scientists from work that would advance public health for all of us. We're pushing back. Tell Congress to demand the NIH restore the grants and stop its censorship campaign at aclu.org/nih_censorship_

Together with Conghe Song, I am recruiting a co-advised PhD student for Fall 2027 who is interested in using a combination of GIS/RS and population/demographic approaches to understand human-environment issues in the global south. Please share! @geographers.bsky.social

Please apply to the UNC GEOG PhD by Dec 15, list both me and Conghe as faculty of interest in the text box, and mention both of us (along with any other faculty of interest) in the research statement. Note that a separate Personal Experiences statement is also required. Happy to take any questions!

Funding rates at NIH for ESIs fell by a third (R01) and half (R21) over the last two fiscal years (i.e. those partially or fully controlled by the current administration). These policies are going to have ripple effects on science for years to come.

You've seen fireworks that look like jellyfish, but what about a jellyfish that looks like fireworks? The E/V Nautilus filmed this rare Halitrephes maasi jellyfish glowing like a firework at a depth of 4,019 feet (1,225 meters) off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. (📷: Ocean Exploration Trust)

We are letting thousands die without even the recognition that their deaths happened. The humanitarian system cannot work more effectively if it does not know where it is working and where it is not, and lack of data is freeing everyone (donors, implementers, perpetrators) from accountability.

Magical creatures don’t exist, eh? Roughly 400 million years ago, before the birth of trees, there were giant mystery cones called “Prototaxites,” which grew nearly 30 feet tall. We literally have no idea what they were. Plant: no Mushroom: no Animal: no Tell me this isn’t a little bit magic

The Skeleton Panda Sea Squirt (Clavelina Ossipandae) is a translucent reef-dwelling creature whose rib-like structures and panda-like markings give it a spooky, animated look. Found in Southeast Asia, it harmlessly filters seawater and helps keep coral ecosystems healthy. Original post

A new global database mapping 40 years of satellite and ocean data reveals that compound marine heatwaves and acidification extremes occur more frequently than expected. Experts warn more research is urgently needed to assess their impacts on marine life and fisheries. By María Paula Rubiano A.

Another stunner from JWST—this time part of a *much* larger scene I'll post later. This portion is made up of stars and protostars in a cluster about 1,000 lightyears from Earth. The bright, multi-point features are nearby stars. The smaller features in the background are other galaxies.
