Just thinking this morning how 10 years ago, Colorado only had one 100,000 acre wildfire on record (in 2002). Since then, we've had 6 more. Mind boggling. climate.colostate.edu/large_wildfi...

Good synthesis here!
Let's talk about the weather and climate changes that preceded the Nepali glacier collapse and landslide. It's well known that Nepal is warming, but we can do better and estimate the changes at the 5200m elevation site where the mass of ice and rock ultimately broke loose. A thread. 🧵🧪

That first graphic reminds me of the analysis I did for the extreme heat of March 2026. As extreme as it is now, it's nerve-wracking to consider it will be within the distribution in 50 years, no longer an outlier.
Projection has become reality 22 years ago, Christoph Schär et al. published a landmark paper in Nature explaining that the 2003 heatwave was a harbinger of things to come. The study featured an iconic figure - shown in countless lectures - illustrating how outlandish the event was at the time
I love that the rainfall map on the big island highlights the lee side of the mountains and the rain shadow.
Final Hawaii precipitation maps from Hurricane Lala. I pulled gauge observations and blended that with model data to get the spatial pattern. My method estimates a max of 45 inches on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa, but there were no gauges in that area to verify.

Much of the outcome of large wildfires is decided well before they start. Well done Coconino National Forest.
Great article here. And a good reminder: while large wildfires are increasing in frequency and size, smaller fires are resulting in more destruction throughout the wildland urban interface.
Urban firestorms like the one that devastated Spokane Saturday have been growing more common because of increased development in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) and climate change. In this post, I document 9 such fires since 2016 in the U.S. yaleclimateconnections.org/2026/08/urba...
