“I know this wasn’t just bad luck,” said Rasheed Ali, whose family lost their home in the 2025 Eaton Fire. “I know that back in the 80s, years before we bought our home, Exxon’s own scientists issued an internal memo that the effects of their petroleum products could be catastrophic.”

Natural gas is NOT "clean." So why do 50% of likely voters believe that is is?? @emorwee.bsky.social and @rebleber.bsky.social unpack how Big Oil spent decades convincing people that this polluting fossil fuel was safe — and how that myth secured its successful takeover of our energy system. 😑

heated.worldWhy smart people believe the myth that natural gas is cleanListen now (34 mins) | How the gas industry turned a half-truth into one of the most successful PR campaigns in fossil fuel history.

After spending decades peddling the myth of "clean" natural gas, the lack of evidence to back up that claim was becoming more noticeable as scientific advancements raised concerns about the harmful impacts of methane. The industry's solution? Fill the void with an answer of its own.👇

climateintegrity.orgThirty years ago, the gas industry co-opted a key government study that bolstered the myth of “clean” natural gas | Center for Climate IntegrityThe gas industry knew their co-funded 1996 EPA study would provide a patina of objectivity and yield benefits for decades to come, a new CCI investigation finds.

Big Oil companies have "known for decades that their fossil fuel products would cause climate catastrophe," said CCI's Corey Riday-White. But instead of warning the public, they "launched the most consequential corporate deception campaign in history" to bury the science and block climate action.

A new @dataforprogress.org poll finds that 75% of likely voters — including more than two-thirds of Republican voters — “oppose legal immunity for oil and gas companies, shielding them from being held accountable for climate disaster damages.”
