Iran had handily de facto legalized Hezbollah presence in Lebanon. Masterstroke. And a layup against those two. A lesson in international law for Trump and Vance. Politics is not business. Political negotiations are not business negotiations. Weak and pathetic. Sideline State Dept: FAFO

Trump's Versailles treaty will forever be remembered as having ceded Lebanon to Iran territorially on threat of global oil shutdown. Catastrophe for Israel. Israel's post "we committed genocide and then finally got the catastrophe war" political position looking precarious

Persepolis was read all over the world—a true international phenomenon. Assigned in every class subject under the sun. During the Obama years, West Point cadets were assigned the book. There's never been anything like it; never anyone like her. What an awful world that couldn't hold her longer.

1/ Ukraine's incessant drone strikes on the Russian rear are causing deep concern among Russian warbloggers. One points out that the entire region's logistics depend completely on road transport and forecasts a "very serious situation" developing. ⬇️ bsky.app/profile/noel...

Large queues are forming at gas stations in occupied Melitopol as Russian logistics across southern occupied Ukraine come under heavy Ukrainian drone pressure. The shortages are likely tied to rising (Hornet) UAV strikes on supply routes and fuel transport. #Ukraine

Reproducing all of Jürgen Schmidhuber’s papers (1990-2025) using an AI coding assistant. Cool project by Yaroslav! It even reproduced the “World Models” paper by me and Schmidhuber (2018) using a toy environment, with a full VAE + RNN world model implementation. Project: github.com/cybertronai/...

Parenting in SF right now to kids in public school and I kinda think this is the big one. As a former teacher talking to teacher friends... I think this needs divine intervention (...@governor.ca.gov) or it's going very long. Negotiations were already a year in.

The strike in SF backs up to long broken housing taxation and permitting, which has long been a national issue, but this is different. This is decades after that. This is a city that doesn't have people to do basic things. And the teachers are the ones to call it...

As a former teacher, and as a parent, and as an SF resident and renter, I'm with the teachers in SF: it's time to fund schools. To do that we need to change the tax base. To do that we need to overcome NIMBY politics. SF has to become a city again.

(1/4) I'm soft launching nooki.me to get some early traction and feedback on what to improve. Excited to see how this platform grows!

4.5 was the one they should have open sourced.

This is really upsetting. And knowing how these companies I operate, I bet there was maybe all but one person within openai advocating for such people as this -- those who have formed meaningful friendships and cadences with AI over many months.

Bluesky's near-consensus that AI doesn't work and won't be a technology that has major knock-on effects on society is…not grounded in reality. No mater how loudly and repetitively people say it.

I’m just a tech critic, standing in front of other tech critics, asking them to please stop insisting that the AI hype bubble is totally gonna collapse any minute now. Your confidence is making it harder for the rest of us. It may be what your audience wants to hear, but that doesn’t make it true.

Agree with @glenweyl.bsky.social: "We cannot "get past" process. We must improve on it."

or thinking that what they believe is the answer will appear unattractive to the "hoi poloi" and therefore needs to be hidden. Making the case for why I think this is bad practice is hard to do briefly, but I think it is a strategic mistake. We cannot "get past" process. We must improve on it.

Bowling Green, Kentucky, is home to 75,000 residents who recently wrapped up an experiment in using AI for democracy: Can an online polling platform, powered by machine learning, capture what residents want to see happen in their city?

Really interesting story about essentially using AI for participatory (non-AI) governance; a lot of stuff about participatory methods in AI is about using crowds or voting or things like that to design the AI itself, this is sort of the reverse. www.technologyreview.com/2025/04/15/1...
