"I’d say the EC books were the most influential than any of the comic books. They influenced people’s lives" — Harvey Kurtzman talked with comics scholar Patrick Rosenkranz in 1972 about the Comics Code Authority, which was adopted in October of 1954 www.tcj.com/harvey-kurtz...
Al Feldstein at EC Comics: “This became the love of my life, adapting Ray Bradbury into comics. I did The Martian Chronicles, Golden Apples of the Sun, and for the horror, I was doing The Dark Carnival. And I just loved it" www.tcj.com/al-feldstein...
ON THURSDAY: William Schwartz reviewed Yeong Shin-Ma's Hodo: "Shin-ma's simple art style forces a coherence to the cruelty and abuse that comes remarkably close to achieving the disaffected tone necessary to demonstrate how Un Kyoung copes."
Brooklyn has a new comics show. Brooklyn Expo of Comics is 11/14 and 11/15, Mt Carmel Church (Williamsburg). We'll be there. It launches with the Bodega Comics Art Trophy Awards Ceremony on 11/14 at Union Pool. And most exciting, Dash Shaw's Like Swimmers is nominated for Best Graphic Novel!
As a comic fan, I naturally have deep respect for insane and long acronyms. So, shouts to BODEGA (Brooklyn Organization Dedicated to the Endurance of the Graphic Arts) for announcing the CAT (Comic Arts Trophy) nominations, which will be revealed at BEC (Brooklyn Expo of Comics). I love ALL of that.
Honored to have Girl Yaoi by @anatwocomics.bsky.social up for Best Minicomic at the inaugural Bodega CAT awards next month. And congrats to everyone else nominated, it’s quite a spread!

Really good piece here. I was very influenced by Joe Matt as a young cartoonist and my first book did a lot of wrestling with “the easy catharsis of humiliation” as Hagar puts it here. Sad that Matt, for all his obvious talent, wasn’t able to grow past it.
Today on TCJ, I dive headfirst into the art-versus-artist trap that is PEEPSHOW by Joe Matt, in which the “just being honest” defense and the “just joking” defense race to see which can reach its artistic and ethical limits faster:
Me and my buddy Jean Marc Ah-Sen talked about art, burn out, mental health, the zine scene and making art that pisses people off for an interview with @comicsjournal.bsky.social

@hecuba.bsky.social reviews The Interpretant by Lily Thu Fierro and Generoso Fierro, "a challenging work of comics that asks us to consider our world, ourselves, and each other, the language we use, our very perceptions."
The War by Garth Ennis, Becky Cloonan and Tamra Bonvillain
This is the bleakest thing I have ever read from Ennis.
Also, some of the blurbs on the front and back are very funny.
I recommend this.
We're floored by this lyrical review of our latest, The Interpretant, which was published today by @comicsjournal.bsky.social! The piece was written by @hecuba.bsky.social, whose work we have admired since reading her review of Martha Verschaffel's 2022 book, Passages. www.tcj.com/reviews/the-...
Wrote about @rotem-anna-diamant.bsky.social's Dancing With The Sheyd for @comicsjournal.bsky.social . During the course of writing this I sung the title to the tune of both "Dancing In Club" (MJ Lenderman version) and Van Halen's "Running With The Devil"

Today on TCJ: Jake Zawlacki went to the Compressed Zine and Music Fair in San Diego and came back with this report (plus photos): www.tcj.com/listening-lo...
But hey, that's not all! @tomshaps.bsky.social reviewed The Outsider, a new biography of the legendary Bernie Krigstein. What did he think of it? Gotta click the link to find out!
For International Translation Day here is my article CONFESSIONS OF A MANGA TRANSLATOR I wrote for @comicsjournal.bsky.social in which I did the unforgivable thing about any profession--I told the truth.

A new interview with the great Mickey Zacchilli!
Here is my 2019 interview with Mickey, which Ana Woulfe kindly mentions.
I would have LOVED to have seen either of the cover bands Mickey was involved in, Sheryl Crow or (oh!) the Pixies
