Published in JGR:MLC! We introduce CaStLe (Causal Space-Time Stencil Learning), a method for grid-level space-time causal discovery that scales efficiently in high-dimensional Earth system data. It enables causal analysis of grid-level processes like eruption plumes. #EarthScience #CausalDiscovery

This is the main reason I'm so angry about the "AI" bubble. All this enormous effort could have been spent combatting the climate crisis and the opportunity cost of your fucking chatbot is going to be the very climate we live in Imagine what we could have done with those 3 trillion dollars?

Singaporean artist Leia Ham reimagined LotR as Tale of the Middle Kingdom, since Chinese name for China (Zhōngguó) means "The Middle Kingdom." Her concept art includes the Fellowship, armors, buildings like Bag End, props like Aragorn's banner and Fellowship brooches, and more. #TolkienTrewsday

Why New Mexico hasn't mandated this for at least all government buildings is beyond me #nmleg

"France passed a single law and instantly unlocked 11 gigawatts of #solarenergy — without using new land. In 2023, France's government mandated solar canopies over all car parks larger than 80 spaces. The scale was enormous: There are 400,000 parking areas across France #ActOnClimate #Renewables

New Mexico’s snowpack is officially GONE. Well, mostly. There’s still a little snow hanging on in the highest peaks and north facing slopes, but the snow at every SNOTEL site has now melted. This ties 2018 for the earliest melt off on record. Average melt off is June 16. #NMwx

This is absolutely incredible: the average temperature over the past six months (October-March) will end up at 52.5°F in #Albuquerque. That's 4°F above the previous record warmest. 🤯 Even after accounting for climate change, the odds of it being THAT warm are 1-in-123,000!! 🤯

New AMS Statement: Dismantling NSF’s National Center for Atmospheric Research would weaken U.S. leadership in weather, water, and climate science, putting public safety at risk. For more than 60 years, NSF NCAR has improved forecasts and early warnings that save lives. More: https://bit.ly/4q6eChn

New Mexico's economy is a fraction of the size of New York City's. If they can enact universal childcare — and relieve working families of a crushing cost burden — surely we can too. It's just a question of political will.

I want to clarify that my example here is actually what I think is one of the best use cases of LLMs (as a sort of search and parsing tool). The problem is handing everyone the keys to a very confident-sounding implementation of that. It takes subject matter experts to verify the results.

There’s so much happening right now, I thought I’d put together a running thread on the dismantling of #climate and research and knowledge infrastructure in the United States 🧵

It’s late at night. But I’ve got to say this. We can endure. This is by far not the worst that has happened to a country, or even in ours. But it will take a broad and committed movement. I am confident.

Really interesting discussion here. I’m particularly interested in how the topic may contribute to doomism and anti-scientific rhetoric as we cross specific thresholds. I’m surprised to learn about how ungrounded the concept is in the science. Popularized by Malcolm Gladwell? That tracks

We need to convey complex ideas in a digestible way while emphasizing that the truth is much more complex. Like a straight line through data points, simplification necessarily increases error. Laypeople need to learn the simple idea and then that complexity lies beneath it, but is not hidden.

I think we’ve learned that simplifying complex scientific ideas helps them be accepted by the public, but it’s important to discuss when simplification is harmful. It’s a touch catch-22 that simplification encourages acceptance but increases risk of being incorrect or misunderstood.

I don’t see how being a fan of Tolkien’s writing can be compatible with modern American conservatism. Love of nature, antiauthoritarianism, and anti-xenophobia seem like inseparable themes. Not to mention all of the communist societies. What does the racist, isolationist, libertarian see in it?

Climate action is like a giant boulder already past its tipping point and rolling downhill toward a greener future. Governments + corporations can slow it—with serious consequences for people and planet alike—but they can't push it back up the hill. Gravity, history, and progress are on our side.
